K20D stubborn memory card door

Oh yeah - I should follow up here to confirm that removing the door seal (just digging it out with a tiny screwdriver or whatever) ends this annoyance: turn the handle and the door pops open consistently and immediately. Full WR is sacrificed of course.

Anybody who removes the seal should make sure that end of the camera is facing downward while doing it, so gravity doesn't send bits of decrepit rubber into the card slot.

Blundering around the web about sticky door seals on other product forums other than cameras turned up some references to talc, some to silicon spray, some to cleaning with alcohol. I tried using isopropyl alcohol with a q-tip on one of the cameras, and the rubber bit almost instantly disintegrated to powder. It's a very thin seal! So I dug out what little was left and tossed it. The only true repair would be a new seal, but honestly these cameras are old and I don't use them with WR lenses anyway; I'd like be able to open these doors without the hassle for the remainder of their lives, so will probably ditch the other seal too before long if the first one keeps behaving.

Just wondering if this is common: my K20D bodies (a pair used for stereography) both have memory card doors that are difficult to open. When I twist the latch, usually nothing happens. Sometimes if I sit and wait for a few seconds the door will belatedly pop open. Lately I've had to use the thumbnail on my other hand, which is a little hard to get into that tiny crack. I haven't yet resorted to prying with a jeweler's screwdriver but might have to before long.

Once the door is open, I can tell that the hinge turns freely, and the spring doesn't seem weak. My guess is the weather seal has become a little gummy with age. If that's correct, what's the sensible approach - just try to dig the stuff out? I'm tempted to brush a little talc around the perimeter of the opening but don't like the idea of any of that eventually migrating into the SD contacts.

A point to add - when I put the card back in and close the door, it's easy to open for a while. This seems to indicate there's no problem with the latch. It only becomes difficult to open when the door has been closed for hours or days. Again I think this is consistent with sticky seals. Or what other causes could there be?
