House near Berkeley, Gloucestershire

The quiet village of Berkeley has punched far above its weight. The university in California derived its name from it (via Bishop Berkeley), the science of vaccination originated here, King Edward II was murdered in the castle (still owned by the Berkeley family), and nearby was the first commercial nuclear power station in the UK. The serial murderer Fred West is rumoured to have buried some of his victims under the floor of the mill, which is a short distance to the right of this photo.

Don't worry, it is preserved and will be for the forseeable future; it is part of the history of a historic town. It would be what in the UK is designated a "listed building" (the list being manged by Historic England, a government department), and legally protected aginst alteration or demolition.Repairs and any alterations must be approved by the authority, and the owner can be made to pay for any essential repairs. To own a listed building is in fact quite a financial liabilty, although you may think it worthwhile for its charm and/or prestige.

The question of re-levelling such a building or otherwise restoring "as good as new" is controversial. For example should they set the Leaning Tower of Pisa back upright? In general the policy is to stabilise aginst further deterioration while avoiding visible changes. That house probably has a fair bit of underpinning and bracing behind the scenes. I am a structural engineer in industry myself, and I would tend to the side of heavier restoration. When sight-seeing some of these old buildings I am mentally putting in extra re-inforcement, in fact some old structures make me nervous to look at (Gainsborough Old Hall was one). Ironically, that building in York, being timber framed, might stand an earthquake better than the masonry buildings next door, even if it lost its glass and some of the plaster-like infill.

I have only occasionally posted on this thread, but often browse, and I would be very sorry to see Dartmoor Dave go. He is one of the most talented photogs on the forum and has a lot of worthwhile things to say too. His pictures are mostly (entirely?) taken on Dartmoor and it shows how good new art can be created continuously, consistently surprising us with its high quality, and yet be based on one topic.

I browse and contribute to a few other sub-forums (not all), and there are a certain few members who seem to be on a short fuse. I have learned not to trigger them off, basically ignoring them, but I notice there are two or three pairs of members who seem to have ongoing feuds with each other going back a long way. Other members just keep out of it, let them get on with it and watch from the sidelines. All forums get this to some extent, usually worse.

I hope Dave changes his mind.

No, I'm safe now because in 1992 I was legally presumed dead. Mind you, it seems a not uncommon name on forums generally, but those others are imposters.

That's the one. Thanks for the reply and links. I gather it was Pentax's advice to send it back to them to replace the battery when needed, but I wonder where that would be these days :(

In fact with a jewellers crosshead screwdriver it looks pretty simple to replace the battery, and to obtain one : someone said it was a CR1620. In the first link (last post was 2014) they were asking about battery life so I revived the thread to add that mine was still going after 12 years, and that I guess it would last the shelf life of the battery unless you are taking selfies at a maniacal rate

Has anyone replaced the battery in the K10D remote control? I recall reading that it could not be changed, you have to buy a new remote if it runs out. Mine has not run out (have had it since 2008 but not used much) but today I noticed three tiny cross-head screws in it, and I opened it out of curiosity. There is a button battery inside, and apparently nothing to stop you replacing it.

I did not actually remove it as that would disconnect it and I wanted no chance to upset it, so I was unable to read what type of battery it was, but there seems no reason to think it is anything other than a fairly standard one.

I am guessing that the same remote is used on other Pentax DSLRs.

OK, I tried Dartmoor Dave's table method but did not find it easy to focus on the edge (manual focussing) because of the background etc and getting my head sideways down on the table. I think my contact lenses were sliding sideways. So I then tried a shot of a window frame about 6 feet away that was level, with camera on a tripod that was also level (using builders spirit level). The image in the viewfinder was dipping to the left, but the taken picture (according to the review screen) was level. Similarly, and consistently, when I got the window frame level in the viewfinder, the taken picture dipped to the right. So it seems in my case that it is the focusing screen or mirror that is a bit out, not the sensor. I shall have a fiddle with it.

Back around 2008 after I'd had my K10D for a while, I realised that my pictures were slightly but noticably tilted. I had thought it was my own fault until I did tests by taking photos of a straight edge along the top of the view in the finder. I discovered on another forum at that time that it was a known issue with K10Ds but that Pentax were in denial of the problem. Since then I have corrected it in software if needed.

Searching on this forum I found these from 9-10 years ago :-

Leaning viewfinder on K10D - PentaxForums.com

How can I deal with the damn K10D camera? - PentaxForums.com

It sounds like a manufacturing fault (as it is so consistent) and it all seems to have been left in the air back then, apart from sending it back for a service which does not necessarily seem to cure it in all cases. I'm wondering what the situation is today - has there been a software fix, which someone mentioned as a possibility in those threads?

1) Ruins of the Great Tower, Raglan Castle. This was the keep of the last medieval castle built in Britain :-

2) River Wye Old Bridge, Chepstow. This is looking from Wales into England. Incidentally, the writer J K Rowling grew up in a house beyond the trees on the extreme left of the picture. It is hard to imagine that this 200 year old single track iron bridge (followed by a single track town gateway) was part of the route of the main road from London to Cardiff until about 1968 :-
