Reminds me of a production I saw of "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams. The stage scenery was of a living room (as the narrator remembered his home ) but set in a ruined building (as the narrator found it when he returned years later). I don't think he did return in the original story. Though only a teenager I was very moved by the play and have often looked out for a chance to see it again.
