Adding a Fujifilm X-T2 to the family?

After three weeks of walking the streets with the Fujifilm X-T2, I can only say: wow! What a camera! Colours are great, the lens (XF 18-55) is great, handling is great! It is just a fun camera to work with.

My main subjects are street photography and family, aka action photography; running after a two-year-old trying to keep the shutter speed as fast as possible while still getting some focused shots. And the X-T2 has proven to be perfect for this. A bit smaller than my K3. Actually only "shorter" in line-of-sight direction, but that makes it much less "bulky". Maybe it's more psychological, but that's how I perceive it. Also the faster autofocus makes a difference. Video is much better. Silent shutter is very useful.

The only downsides are:

* Battery life: I only have one battery pack and that lasts one day of shooting. So I *have* to remember to charge at night, or I'll be out of juice the next day. Solution, of course is to buy another battery or two.
* EVF: The EVF itself is great and although it is noticeable that you are looking at a screen and not directly through the lens, it is great. No perceivable lag, no head-ache, all good. The on-screen information is configurable, so that's great. My problem is: Either I have the EVF on at all time, and run out of battery even faster, or I set it to "eye-sensor" which will switch it on when a proximity sensor fires. But that switching on lasts, I don't know, maybe 0.3 seconds, which is enough to at times not get the shot. The image is just not instantly there. And I ask myself, is the camera on? I press the shutter half way again, to make sure and all of that distracts me. Maybe I find a way to get use to this or just leave it on and (see above) carry another charged battery with me.

To sum up, I am happy with the purchase, and I might sell one of my Pentax bodies or both, see next post....

Cheers, Steffen

After three weeks of using almost exclusively the X-T2, this may be the way to go for me, too. I own a K5 and a K3II. The former is at my parents house, so that's not in use anyway.... The K3II is a camera, I really really like, so I am hesitating.... But probably I will sell it to even out the bank account O_o and to save for the K1. On the other hand, I partly bought the K3II for the astrotracker. I didn't do that much astro photography yet, but I'd like to some day.

I also have a bunch of modern and vintage K-mount lenses which I will not sell. On the one hand, I am interested in film lately, so I bought an Electro Spotmatic and maybe will buy a ME Super (local antiquities shop; I should really not enter these!!!). While the Spotmatic takes 42mm, the ME Super might be the body for the old K-lenses. I might sell or keep the modern lenses. One of them is FF, and the others can still be used in the K1's crop mode, thus rescuing me from having to buy many new lenses for the K1 right away.

One the other hand, I ordered a K-mount - X-mount adapter and will try these lenses on the Fuji. Mirrorless ftw!!!

So, that's my state of thought at the moment, sorry for rambling aimlessly about, I was more or less thinking out loud.

Cheers, Steffen

Thanks for the tip, will do!

Yes, I forgot to mention: I was lucky (Didn't really check until I had bought it) that it came with the XF 18-55, and not with the XC or a cheap third-party lens or sth,,,,

I was aware that there was "the kit lens" on the body and that it was a Fujinon. And I knew that there are no bad lenses made by Fuji. Afterwards I noticed that there was a cheaper, less sharp lens also sold with the camera.... but not mine ;)

It was the pawn shop's fault.

Suddenly there was a X-T2 between all the Canikons. They wanted 840US$ (all prices converted from local currency), I asked for a discount, they said, not yet. They lower the price every two weeks or so.

I came back a week ago, fearing, it might be gone and it was still there, with a price tag of 740US$. I was totally willing to pay that, but said, I'll take it with me for 610US$. I expected them to settle for 700 or so, but I was wrong. They said yes.

Woohoo!

So I am a proud and happy owner of a Fuji now!!

And boy, what a camera!!

I will post shots soon :D

Cheers, Steffen

thanks, I'll have a look at it

thanks. The EVF seems to have a setting (boost mode?) where you can increase the fps, so that it's not laggy, in case one feels that with the normal mode. The EVF being smaller is not such big of a deal. It might even be an advantage for me as I am wearing glasses and supposedly it's easier to see the whole frame on a somewhat smaller EVF if your eye is a few mm further away from it.

That leaves the X-T30 having better video and image quality and being smaller, which I like, and are two of my important points....

On the downside it's more expensive, not weatherproof and (that's a minor thing) it doesn't have as many buttons and doesn't have a dedicated ISO wheel. I tend to change settings a lot, so that's a negative point (according to me) but a minor one.

I guess I'll wait a few month, put a few hundred $$$ more on the side and buy the X-T30, then??

Hello, thanks.

I think this will be my mid to long term path.... I am also wanting to get a K1 for some time. Problem is, this will be a bit of an investment in time and money (selling the APS-C gear and buying the K1 with at least one decent lens to start with)

But good and reassuring to hear that you went that way and are happy.

Cheers, Steffen

Hello, thanks.

I looked at the X-T30, and what I don't like about it is that it has the X-T20's EVF, which I only read and saw negative comments about. The sensor and video capabilities seem to be better than those of the X-T2, but not too much, apparently. Also it costs roughly twice what the X-T2 costs!

Hello, thanks for the comments.

FF is also a project, but a different one ;)

Sony is great, I know, but in my experience always more expensive in comparison to similar products of other brands.

Haven't looked at the X-E3, will do that.

Hello, thanks. I will have a look at som m4/3... after all, they *are* smaller and can be more affordable.

I don't know about the X-T1, but the X-T20 and X-T30 seem to have the same (or similar) EVF, which is small and laggy; and the X-T2 and X-T3 seem to have the same (or similar) EVF, which is supposed to be one of the best ones out there. And as I am used to optical VFs, I don't want to make a compromise there....

Hello Pentaxonians,

I recently have been tempted to get a (possibly used) Fujifilm X-T2, while of course keeping my K5 and K3-II.

The reasons are:
  • trying out shooting video

  • have a smaller camera for street and travel

  • trying out Fuji glass

  • getting a new toy ;)

I chose this camera after an afternoon of comparing specs and reviews online. So I am quite sure, the camera suits my wishes without ripping a huge hole in my bank account.

My question to you is: Concerning the first two points on the list, are there comparable cameras in that price range (500-1000 US$).

The features I am looking for most are:

  • 4K video

  • weight <600g

  • size (carry around, fit in small camera bag)

  • excellent EVF or optical VF

  • good manual controls (no need for scene programs etc.)

  • APS-C or bigger sensor

  • good dynamic range

  • good AF (at least better than on the K5 and K3 ;) )

, roughly in that order. There are other nice-to-haves but I think the list is already large enough....

To be clear, I am not asking you to do the research for me, but rather if you have a camera that does all of that, or you were between the X-T2 and another camera, I would appreciate you mention it, so I can look it up.

Thank you, have a nice day, evening, night, wherever you are,

Steffen
