Back when we were getting live trees every year for Christmas I would cut a slice off the bottom of the tree before we discarded it. After it had completely dried I would slice a really thin slice, paint something on it with the date, then coat in verathane.
It mad some really nice ornaments that told you what year the tree was from. Cheap, but some of our more cherished decorations.
