Do older "film" lenses underperform on digital cameras compared with new lenses?

I think there is a lot of confusion, with the general title of this thread, and the one specific point I see in the above quote. Performance is a very broad subject with respect to, in no specific order, resolution, sharpness, contrast, color rendering, flare resistance, and bokeh ( however the hell this is qualitatively measured)

To select one, and only one criteria, and ignore all others is quite a different matter. In general, newer lenses and coatings out perform older ones, and some newer optical media (lens element material) can lead to optical designs which can (but are not always) better than older ones, but, having collected and used regularly a substantial number of different legacy lenses, along with some very modern designs, what I can say is that once the characteristics of a lens are totally identified by a photographer, the end quality of the photograph is much more dependant upon the skill of the photographer, than the lens used to take the photo.

The morel here is go out Andy shoot, and learn how to exploit the strengths and weaknesses of your gear, and stop debating good, better, best!
