I’d originally thought to buy a DAB radio when our old AM/FM unit gave up the ghost, so, while I was searching around and discovering all sorts of options, I simply hooked up my phone/tablet to an existing small-but-not-tiny JBL bluetooth sound unit, which did the job well, without adding to our hardware load, and which provided better audio than many of the less-exotic dedicated units (I’d been seriously considering the Bose unit up until then). Then, after some house renovations that required dismantling all my audio equipment, while re-establishing our Sonos system, I discovered the vast spectrum of internet streaming “radio” stations available via the software. So, the only dedicated DAB+FM/AM units we now have are in our motorcars. A case, you might say, of less is more. ;)

Yes. This camera is supposed to be a simple compact. Perhaps the next one might have such a feature. Ricoh made quite a number of rangefinder cameras, but I don't know of any Pentax models. I seem to recall that there was a rangefinder accessory for the Asahiflex, although I may be confusing that with another make.

My only older Pentax zoom lenses are the A24-50/4, A35-105/3.5 and M40-80/2.8-4. All still function as new (I think – only the 40–80 was bought new by me), certainly without the problems described. All yield good results on my Pentax DSLRs. Maybe the OP has just had bad luck with purchasing some of the older lenses. Not everyone looks after their gear as they should.

Next time I’m in the UK, I must find out where you can still get good fish and chips. My last few visits saw plenty of curry houses and the like, but fish and chip shops, which used to be the overwhelming majority of take-away in Britain, were nowhere to be found. Clearly, they’ve become only for the elite few! :D

I imagine most of us know people like that. There’s a gradation, though, as some rely on the name because it carries a reputation of lasting quality, while for others it’s a matter of affiliation – being seen to be part of a group “in the know”. That last isn’t new – I remember well the tobacco marketing from the 1950s and 60s for example ”Join the jet set – smoke Peter Stuyvesant”. It’s pathetically silly, but it clearly works with an awful lot of people.

Having bought mine new (to go with my K2DMD) and used it on all my cameras since, I can highly recommend this little beauty of a lens. Best of luck with the sale.

Thanks for the tip about Lundy Island, which I’d not heard of previously, but about which a quick search revealed an interesting history. I’ll make a mental note on a piece of paper (as Spike Milligan might have said) to check it out when I’m next in the UK.
Streaming video (and audio) is just the latest means by which money is wheedled from us by those who seek profit from our collective lack of imagination. Here in Oz, I tend to listen to the free-to-air ABC radio (the local equivalent of the BBC service) for much the same reason as you, but also because it has the widest range of useful topics of all the broadcasters, and likewise for its TV service. We also enjoy a semi-government broadcaster in the SBS (set up initially to serve the many ESL migrant communities here) which plays a lot of non-English-speaking programs (with locally-produced English language subtitles) that beat the pants off many Anglophone productions from the more conventional sources. Needless to say, both are disparaged by the major commercial media companies owned by a (deliberately unnamed) expatriate Australian, who would much prefer his world view to dominate the minds and pockets of Australians.
I know it’s become a trope among some younger Anglophone generations to blame the ills of the world on those born in the post-WW2 baby boom, and they have some justification in particular areas, but when I look at the lives of my former schoolmates, I don’t see rampant greed or mindless consumerism among many of them. Rather, we tend toward conservatism in spending our money, particularly those born in the immediate post-war years, when the exigencies of war and the habits of the previous frugal generations were still at the forefront of thinking in our early lives. Mend and make-do is something I still practice, even though I spent my working life in the financial comfort provided by an active profession of engineering, sometimes to the frustration of my lovely wife. Again, it’s a trope, but I’m frequently appalled by the spendthrift attitude of some people not born into that way of thinking.
What to do about it for ourselves and, more importantly for future generations, is the thing that should be exercising our minds. As I inferred above, the widespread lack of imagination is, I think, the source (or maybe, more appropriately, the sink) of our gargantuan consumerist tendencies. Money and material possessions will continue to be the ultimately joyless goals of the majority until enough people are equipped with a few simple ideals and tools for thinking about what really affects their lives and states of contentment. I’m told that critical thinking is now being taught in schools here, and it couldn’t come at a better time, but it needs more than that, and that’s an area that is broader than this little thread can deal with at one time.

I just finished ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller. Those who’ve read Homer’s The Iliad will know the part played by Achilles in that story of the Trojan War. Miller’s story expands on the life of Achilles, seen through the eyes of his companion Patroclus.

Welcome to Pentax Forums from Australia. Interesting comments of yours on things missing from the contemporary camera world, which I’m sure many of us can relate to from our past experience, and which I think many younger people are discovering independently, particularly with the revival of film.
Have fun with your K-3iii Monochrome. I hope it keeps bringing back some of the fun for you.

When I looked at the K-3's SR mount, and compared the size of the APS-C sensor with that of a 35FF sensor, I deduced that, as far as those dimensions were concerned, you could fit the 35FF sensor on that mount. Of course, there were other considerations like the size of the electromagnets to cope with the heavier sensor, which could have required a larger body (and so it turned out), but it was a possibility. The main argument at the time from some armchair engineers was that the K-mount was too restrictive to include SR with the 35FF sensor, although they turned out to be dead wrong.
It might be possible to refine the components and shrink the size of a future body, given the experience of designing and manufacturing the K-1/ii, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. If anything, the design priorities should be on further improvements to the viewfinder. I'd love to see the patented hybrid viewfinder finally make an appearance, but it's been such a long time since that patent appeared that I'd be dubious about it ever being included. Nonetheless, the new prism glass might make it from the K-3iii to the K-1iii, and that in itself would be a worthwhile addition.

I hadn’t caught up with that, thank you, all of which makes one wonder about the distribution of their optical design resources, in particular, not to mention the associated electronics design. The automotive optics field can’t have been sufficiently profitable for them to want to continue with it, but I suppose everything’s for sale at the right price.

If I recall correctly, some time ago Ricoh announced that they were diversifying its optical range to include machine recognition and vehicle optics. While I haven’t kept up with developments there, it’s possible that this market, being undoubtedly larger than camera optics, is taking much of their attention. Nonetheless, it doesn’t give much encouragement to those waiting for the next big Pentax optic.

In the hands of a user, from the photo, it looks very delicate, something I never found with my Q. I was forever frustrated by the lack of an EVF for it, though. I know there were some users who didn’t find that to be a problem, but I suspect most of them weren’t attempting to use it in anything like the harsh Australian sunlight.
