I had a similar feeling at the site of the Battle of Culloden, near Inverness in Scotland. I guess it’s the result of knowing something of the history plus the terrain and the way in which the site is commemorated. Some people might call it the spirits of the departed, but I’ve always leaned more toward the mind.

Maybe another discussion about cheese is needed to revive the thread and get his attention.

Some Argentine colleagues I met at an international conference said that the Portuguese spoken in Brazil is more like Argentine Spanish, so you’d have to adapt your dialect to have the shark understand you, unless it had crossed the Atlantic.

Yes, my sister was in Perth for Xmas Day, from Brisbane. They decamped to Rottnest Island for the afternoon, where the moderating influence of the Indian Ocean helped somewhat.
My eldest, who's lived on both sides of the country, reckons Perth is preferable because the Indian Ocean coastal temperatures are lower than those of the Pacific, providing greater relief in summer. Perth at least gets a winter that’s notable for more than just a humidity change, but they have more shark “incidents” on the coast there. ;)

I think 42°C was the warmest temperature I’ve experienced, in a natural environment, and that was at Port Augusta in South Australia, near the start of a trip across the Nullarbor Plain to Perth, Western Australia.
That was quite enough for me. Getting out of the air-conditioned car into that heat was akin to stepping into a sauna before the water hits the hot rocks. Marble Bar in Western Australia has the reputation for heat, but only for consecutive days, and Port Augusta regularly equals its highest temperatures.
Dry heat like that is tolerable, up to a point. Anything above core body temperature (around 37°C) limits your ability to lose excess body heat, so you can rely on perspiration and respiration to avoid heat stroke provided the relative humidity is sufficiently low. People loosely talk about acclimatising, but that’s largely a mental response, rather than physiological.

Say no more (he said knowingly).
From Wikipedia: The name Robert is a Germanic given name, from Proto-Germanic *χrōži- "fame" and *berχta- "bright". Compare Old Dutch Robrecht and Old High German Hrodebert (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright"). |

From Wikipedia: "Politics (from Greek: πολιτικός politikos, definition "of, for, or relating to citizens") is the practice and theory of influencing other people. Politics involves the making of a common decision for a group of people, that is, a uniform decision applying in the same way to all members of the group. It also involves the use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person. More narrowly, it refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance — organized control over a human community, particularly a state. Furthermore, politics is the study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community (a usually hierarchically organized population) as well as the interrelationship(s) between communities."
So, saying we won't turn to politics in itself "involves the use of power by one person to affect the behaviour of another person" and is therefore, by definition "politics". Hmm.
Don't you just love internal contradictions and ethical dilemmas? Not to mention exercises in pedantry. :D
Pass the HP sauce, please.:lol:

I would be. Sony's been losing a heap of money on most of their product lines, at least until recently, over the past few years. When you look at how they've been spraying camera models all over the place, it's not hard to see why, regardless of how good each of them may have been. By the time you pay for R&D on each one, too many models competing with each other can finish up costing you a lot of profit, and it's profit that drives the business, not sales. Given that the North American financing subsidiary has been carrying the company recently, you'd think the shareholders might think about forcing a sale the other way, rather than acquiring another competing business to lose even more money.

He couldn't be out taking photos, could he? Maybe taking photos of abandoned car plants? Or maybe he's been taken up in the Rapture - the possibilities are endless. There's a thought: "Rapture". It may be that he's out taking photos with the prototype FF Pentax (similar concept, for some). ;)
