New Sony A7II and A9 with IBIS

It probably got lost in the several layers of quote, but I was replying to the original question: "I don't see how this is a bad thing". I therefore spent more time addressing this possibility than how it might not be a bad thing. The notion of false bias comes to mind, here, but at least it's promoted the discussion a little further.

I really don't want to detract from anyone's argument, and I certainly don't want to denigrate the A7 series, but I do stand by my description of the A7 as a niche product. It's a 35mm-sensored mirrorless ILC that is seen now to be as much a platform for re-purposing other makers' lenses as it is a system in its own right. When the system grows (as it is, slowly) to the point where users can and do regard it as a match for other makers' lens systems, then it stands a good chance of becoming mainstream in the professional and high-end enthusiast markets. There's nothing wrong with being a niche product, just as there's nothing wrong with the concept of the hardware itself. I simply wouldn't get carried away with it as being the destroyer of DSLR systems, at least just yet. Remember how the Nikon D800 was going to destroy APS-C cameras?

I did canvas both scenarios. Why are you implying I was only talking about the second?

Regardless of that, sales do not imply profit, and talking up product doesn't equate to sales. The A7 may well become mainstream, but at the moment, it's still a niche product.

Don't get me wrong about the A7 line, by the way. I think it's an appealing camera, but I'll reserve judgment on the A7II until I get my hands on one. I was tempted to buy the original, but the price and functionality using non-eMount lenses held me back.

PS - I live outside the US, and I didn't see a single A7 while I was in Europe a couple of months ago - lots of Canons and Nikons, a smattering of other Sonys and the occasional Pentax or film SLR, but no A7s. It wasn't until I was back in (not-so-conservative) Australia that I saw an A7.

It's not a bad thing if you're making a good profit from a niche product, and the A7 line is a niche product, because of its present appeal to a comparatively small group of enthusiasts. It is not such a good thing if you're pricing it to undercut your rival's products and gain market share, unless you've factored in realistic larger longer-term sales predictions. If you have a cash cow that can subsidise early losses (or even low profits) that's well and good, but I think the point was being made that Sony's cash cows are not obvious.

This, of course, is from the seller's viewpoint. Buyers might have a different perspective, but perhaps not for long if the product doesn't last in the marketplace.
