My experience with Flickr is much the same as Paul's, except I've been with them a little longer. The only reservation I've got with Flickr is what might happen following Yahoo's sale to Verizon. I don't have any inkling of what, if anything, is being planned, but I can imagine some bean counter looking at the cost of maintaining a whole swag of free accounts, and deciding how best to "monetise" the service.

What time scale are you seeing? My 8 year-old MacBook Pro runs the latest OS X version maybe a little bit slower, but with greater functionality, and no software incompatibility with anything I paid money for (including CS5). Can't speak for the other OS, because my last employer changed the hardware on a three year cycle, allegedly to keep ahead of the Windows changes, but more likely because the IT department wanted to keep themselves in business.

If Google does buy Flickr, I'll be exiting fairly rapidly, even if they choose not to kill it directly. I have developed an intense dislike for the way they push their real clients at users, even in Google Maps, which is one of their better products.

Yahoo's a bit vulnerable, at the moment, so don't say that too loud.
Picasa was never much of an editor, but it was a good organiser.
