The lens reviews here give the Sigma an average of 8.78, brought down by a few 8s that refer to AF hunting and purple fringing wide open, but which is still a very good rating. The reviews for the Pentax rate it higher, but I note that most of them are much earlier than the reviews of the Sigma, so the bodies might have had some influence there. I don’t have either lens, so I can’t objectively comment.

I’ve just been reading in the Atlantic about LaGuardia’s multi-billion dollar refurbishment. From my single experience of it, years ago, the kindest thing you could have said about it was that it was a bit tired. It’s the only Western airport I’ve been in where I’ve felt really uncomfortable, so it’s good to see such a transformation to it.

Not that has anything much to do with your very nice photo. :D

Interesting image, Rob. I wonder if the colour of the plastic bits in the bower collection indicate a preference, or just happenstance.

As Norm has pointed out, it doesn’t have to be like that, provided you don’t necessarily accept the offered settings (which are sometimes good, nonetheless), but look at the preview closely, before you commit to any settings offered or modified. I quite often reduce the setting, to get an acceptable result that will stand up to scrutiny. Denoise AI is a vast improvement over previous denoise software, but others are catching up now.

The masking feature within Topaz’s AI apps is better at identifying edges than the one in CS5, I find. There is an object recognition option, too, although it’s only really good with people, so far. I imagine that will improve with development.

I occasionally find some wonderfully bizarre effects using Topaz Sharpen AI. A high-ISO indoors photo that I took of a statue with my K-5 looked like it had a bad case of acne, but turned out much better using Topaz Denoise AI. We could start a whole thread with Sharpening Fails.

Well, yes, but then some countries are far more litigious than others.

Ricoh could do a lot worse than reviving that lens, perhaps with HD coatings and internal AF drive.

I must admit the same question has crossed my mind when I’ve seen ads for the 645 lens. From the lens specifications here, they’re both 7 elements in 6 groups designs, with a 77mm filter, so it’s a fair question. Unfortunately, only the A lens optical design diagram is given. The FA* design is definitely different, even though it retains the same filter thread.

That’s a nice group of work, Craig.

The last shot puts me in mind of my mother’s wall ornaments from the 1950s. :D

Considering the crop, the teleconverter and ISO 6400, it still looks pretty good on a 10” iPad Pro!

Very nice work there, Gaz. Good old glass still holds up well (not to mention, the photographer’s input :D).

As a test of my new K-3iii, I took this shot of the pinnacle of Mount Wellington, from a distance of 11.4km, with my F*300/4.5.

The photo was cleaned up for colour in CS5, and a little sharpening was added in Topaz AI (less than the recommended amount, which produced artefacts) plus some micro-contrast adjustment in Topaz Studio.

If you link through to look at the Flickr image and zoom in (I recommend using a web browser, as the Flickr app tends to blur detail) you can quite clearly see the structure of the tower on the right and the tops of the basalt columns.

Very nice work with the DA*300.

The EXIF entry for focal length is a bit odd, saying the 35mm equivalent is 459mm.
