I shot my university's alumni reunion last year with another guy. To my surprise he was using a k20 and a 50-135. Grantend he also used a Nikon d300 but it was a big surprise that both of us were using Pentax.

I've seen Pentax a few times around. Usually it's a Kx and the person is using a 18-55. I don't know (other than the above mentioned time) seeing anyone using a Pentax DSLR with a lens other than the kit.

I actually had just this kind of thing happen to me. Luckily my wife's Olympus saved the day. The thing about Pentax is that you buy into a system that bang-for-your-buck is unmatched (except maybe by Olympus in some aspects)

If you you make a living on your photography, especially wedding photography you either

  1. Go C or N and get top end full-frame gear and make the investment and keep your Pentax stuff as a specialty item

  2. Have multiple back options (you should always have at least one layer of back ups)

  3. Accept the risk and just hope that the day of the shoot isn't when things break.

Pentax is a great system. Their brand awareness in North America is abysmal and they refuse to put their stuff in mainstream stores to gain the exposure. Their camera division is really small. It's just the way things are.

I was at the Woodburn outlet. Shutterbug (I think it was a shutterbug??) there had one. They had a dusty K7 and a 16-45. I suppose that doesn't really count as the Metro area but it's the closest I've seen. That was about a month ago. They might have been getting ready to send it back though. Can't remember.

There's a place in Corvallis that did when I last checked (two years ago). Chances are they don't anymore.

I've never seen Pentax outside of a very select few camera stores in Oregon. Most of the time if you ask at a camera store if they sell Pentax they say that the company made them send them all back.

Never seen one in a best buy or walmart.

I live in the Portland area and I see Olympus DSLRs on a fairly regular basis. Granted it is one among 50 or 60 Canikons but I do see them. Usually it's the e-3 or the e-450. I've only see one e-620 and that's my wife's. Some of the photo stores down here in portland do sell olympus. Mostly the PENs but they sell DSLRs too.

I think that Pentax is so rare because they aren't in big-box stores. If they were in the stores and the sales reps properly trained, we would see a whole lot more Pentax's. Why the heck Pentax didn't try and get the KX (and the multiple colors) into Best buy is beyond me...Costco and Walmart would have been two other stores they should have tried to get into as well.

I shot the Pacific University alumni reunion a few months ago and the other photographer (much to my surprise) shot a k20d with the 50-135! Other than that...the only other pentax shooters I know are my brother and my dad's cousin.
