I beg to differ (for at least one interpretation of your sentence). Recent flower images have required me to use very high f/#s to get all the petals into focus. Here is Barbara Manikin at about 2 ft (from the filter plane) using the SMA Pentax FA 645 120mm Macro at f/4. Note that the left eye (her right eye) is out of focus. This lens is of reasonable heft.
