Why I have decided not to upgrade.

Yes, but does that mean "better" colour 'rendition' / colour 'depth' or just "less noise"? Or is due to a bit different calibration of the white balance regardless there's slight less noise? Besides, like I said I do prefer more detail rather than less noise, especially considering I'm an ISO-100 shooter. Well, that's me.

Once they'll launch a version with less noise WITHOUT the cost of less detail, then that one will be a clear advantage in both areas (or an advantage in one area without being a disadvantage in the other one). Til then it's not clear for me (improving in one aspect at the cost of getting worse in another one is not an improvement).

From what I've seen on that analysis, the K1-II offers less noise at the cost of less detail (the images from the K1 look sharper across the whole range at the cost of -only from higher ISOs- slight more noise). Some talk about better colour rendition / colour depth on the K1-II (at high ISOs) too, but I can't notice this.

Since I'm mainly an ISO-100 shooter (with very minor exceptions <0.1% of ISO-200 or 400, no higher), I'd say that for me the difference in noise levels would be negligible (<0.1% - 0%) to none on both models, but the difference in detail would remain even at low ISO settings (although possibly negligible at base ISO), giving the edge overall to the K1. And considering that actually I do prefer sharper images which at ISO-100 or 200 will still give zero noise, my thinking is that the upgrade is not worth it. Morover, I do prefer the K1.

Whether a future K1-III or K1-IV will fix or not that loss of detail over the K1 while delivering better noise levels (only at higher ISOs), it remains to be seen. But for me and for now, I'd say that the K1 is better at base ISO overall (zero noise and no difference or slightly better detail) than the K1-II, and I still prefer the more detailed K1 over the less noisy but also less detailed K1-II at higher ISOs.

I bought several Zeiss Distagon lenses (25mm, 28mm and 35mm) with original Pentax ZK mount for the K1 and the results are absolutely outstanding. Gorgeous. The level of detail and micro-contrast reached by these glasses easily outperform the Pentax (Tamron) 24-70mm which I'm disappointed with for the price. These Zeiss lenses are truly great for landscape shooting, however if you try to focus at short or medium distances (up to let's say 50-60m), although the camera gives you visual (green dot) and audible (beep) signals, it's really difficult to spot-on the focus (my advice is to take several shots moving slightly the focus ring between shots, so you'll be sure to get at least one in-focus). Everything further than that distance is in-focus when you put it to infinite.

Another very good lens (although the focal length isn't my prefered) is the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4, and it's autofocus. But I'm going to keep my Zeiss lenses, I just love them! And I have Zeiss T* circular polarizer filters on each and I couldn't be more satisfied with the combo!

If this helps.

How about the colour rendition between both models? Is there really a difference on greens and blues for landscape photography as Pentax claims to have improved on the K1-II?

I'm shooting essentially in JPG (finest / highest quality) because I hate "wasting" (spending) time in PP, unless it's really necessary to dramatically improve the dynamic range on shadows in low light / strong backlighting conditions.

At the beginning I noticed the JPGs to be quite flat, dull, weak, lifeless... right out of the camera and playing intensively with the contrast and brightness wasn't the right result to obtain good JPGs. But after several hundreds os test shots with the K1 I discovered that increasing the clarity to +4 (the writing speed slows down a lot though) the images came to life, the change was night and day, with much more sense of natural (not forced) contrast, colour saturation and "sharpness". The trick for getting quality JPGs is then setting the clarity to +4, nothing else.

However I still find the greens (vegetation) and blues (skies) a bit weak in certain conditions compared to Nikon. If I increase the colour saturation, the result is quite forced for all the other colours and if I play with the hue the whole colour chart "rotates" (changes) in one or other direction and I don't like that, I like the hue (tone) at 0.

I didn't know that I can save different image settings (contrast, clarity, tone curve -hue-, saturation, luminance) for each colour individually to my taste. How can I do that? (I'm going to look that at the owners manual once at home, but in the mean time you might help me on that).

Thanks!

So far I'm a little bit (just a little bit) concerned about color rendition from my K1, compared to Nikon. The colors from Nikon (the greens [grass and vegetation in general] and blues [skies]) in landscapes are "crisper" in some circunstances, especially with little sun / in cloudy days.

Pentax claims an improvement in color rendition on its new K1-II, mentioning especifically those two colors for landscape photography.

Has anyone compared both models with regards to color rendition? That's my main doubt whether considering or not to jump for the K1-II. The other considerations / specifications on the new model are irrelevant for me, as I don't shoot above ISO 400 (I shoot 99.9% of times at ISO 100) and I never use Pixel Shift (I never use tripod and I don't trust in the announced "hand held Pixel Shift", as it's physically impossible to get perfect images without artifacts and some blur objects and, besides, if any improvement, this will only be noticeable zooming-in and with a loop).
