Got Squirrel Shots? (In memorial of Rupert)

An alert young squirrel in the park near home. I had a few minutes before dinner to take a few shots with my new Super Takumar 200/4. On a Fuji X-T20 crop sensor body, this is plenty enough lens for semi-wild park animals.

These are pretty much tame in that they will eat out of the hand of the lady who lives here and one will even get up in her lap. As opposed to the ones I usually photograph which are wild squirrels that live in the local park and tend to bolt if they see you even look at them. The true wild squirrels are the ones that live out on the side of the mountain and may never see a human in the course of their lives.

Here's a heavily-cropped shot of one of the wild squirrels in the park near me, taken late in the evening with a Super Takumar 150 on a Fujifilm X-T20 body.

I'm with you, photolady, and I hope you can prevail. I always enjoy seeing your pictures.

Our HOA made us take in the feeders last year due to a rat infestation in the neighborhood. Personally, I would have put up with the rats, but some people are deathly afraid of them.

The squirrels in our park are wild and you can't get close to them. My best long lens is a Pentax F 80-200 so that's what I use when stalking them. I often use it on a Fujifilm X-T20 body but in truth I get just as many good pictures using my backup K100D. I'm delighted with how well the autofocus works on the old camera. And either I got an especially good example, or the lens is one of the great under-rated optics of the Pentax lineup. This shot taken with K100D, SMC Pentax F 80-200 at 180mm, 1/100s, f/5.6, ISO 200, post-processed in RawTherapee, cropped, Velvia 100 emulation, moderate unsharp mask.

I guess it's too nice a day for a squirrel to hang around the den. Nobody went in or out, and nobody even peered out the entrance at me out of the corner of his eye. But there were plenty of frisky rodents running around the area, including this one, who sat on a stub and ate a nut, scratched and groomed himself just a few feet from the entrance to the den. So I'm thinking he's one of the residents. I might have another day or two to pursue him, before the bitter cold predicted for next week closes in and sends all the local squirrels into semi-hibernation.

I took this one on the same SMC Pentax-F 80-200mm f/4.7-5.6 that I have been enjoying the last several days, but this time on a Fujifilm X-T20 body.

I went back to the park to stalk the squirrel again today. This time he was part way out of his hole before he spotted me. He froze, I got a couple of shots, and then when I took a step he backed into his hole. I expect I should leave him a few treats if I'm going to continue doing this, to make up for the stress I'm putting him under. I wonder if he will be watching for me tomorrow. We'll see...

SMC Pentax-F 80-200mm f/4.7-5.6 at 200mm, f/5.6 on K100D.

This little cousin meandered along the wall, oblivious to me standing above and watching through the camera viewfinder. When I clicked the shutter, he shrieked and dodged away into the bushes.

Paul, the natural setting really makes the shot. A city park counts for natural setting for a squirrel.

Focus peaking is helping me with my squirrel pictures. I can still focus my Takumars without it, but it speeds up the process considerably. That helps a lot with the fidgety little rodents that don't stay put for long. Fujifilm X-T20, SMC Takumar 105 f/2.8 at f/2.8, 1/58s, ISO 400.

I caught this fast-moving backyard rodent in mid-leap, testing out an *ist-Ds that I bought for my daughter. I like the camera so much I think I will buy another one to keep for a backup/loaner. Pentax F 80-200 at 200mm, f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO 200, +1.00 Ev.

The squirrels in my back yard maple try to stay in the shadows, probably so as not to attract the attention of the local marauding hawks and owls.

Rupert, I never knew you, but it's astonishing what you started...I wonder if you had any idea how many people would "join in the frenzy"...and how much pleasure you would create.

I just picked up a Canon - or should I say "cannon" - FD 70-210 f/4 that, on my crop sensor Fujifilm X-T20, lets me crouch in my window and reach out to the squirrels in the red maple in my back yard. Here are a couple of efforts. This squirrel photography is not easy...Taking a few of my own gives me even more respect for the masterful photographers at Pentax Forum.
