I think this video helped cleared things up for me more than any of the chatter/threads/hearsay (where I probably got my misinformation).

What apertures are required to enable autofocus, including cross-type or high-precision focusing, on Canon DSLR cameras? - Photography Stack Exchange

'Canon EOS Digital Rebel (original, 300D), Digital Rebel XT (350D), Rebel XS (1000D), Rebel T3 (1100D), D30, D60, 10D
All points function to f/5.6; the center point is normal-precision cross-type (it is both vertical- and horizontal-sensitive to f/5.6 and is not high precision at f/2.8). All other points are single-line (EOS D30 and D60: vertical sensitive only). Autofocus does not function below f/5.6.'

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (400D), Rebel XSi (450D), Rebel T1i (500D), Rebel T2i (550D), Rebel T3i (600D), Rebel SL1 (100D), Rebel T5 (1200D), Rebel T6 (1300D), 20D, 30D
All points function to f/5.6. The center point is cross-type, and all other points are single-line. The center point is high-precision dual cross-type with f/2.8 or faster lenses. Autofocus does not function with lenses narrower than f/5.6.

Could be camera/af system specific. This first excerpt is regardless of lens, just setting specific. The second excerpt specifies lenses narrower than f/5.6 (perhaps lenses with a max of f/5.6 or paired with a TC resulting in f/5.6 or narrower).

Interesting. Are we positive that when aperture is stopped down (regardless of TC), that the amount of points available is not limited?

Not arguing, just curious.

Perhaps on paper. In use, focusing to a scene that has already passed (especially in fast shooting situations when panning with a moving subject) could be the difference between a shot in focus and one that is mis-focused.

Nikon doesn't deserve a pass for releasing a $2,000/$3,000 camera bodies a few firmware updates shy of matching the performance of products already on the market like the D750/D850.

It's also important to note that AF Systems can be impacted when shooting at f/8.

With a surveying Harrier Hawk, I aim for 2000. I'll take 1250/1600 if lighting is poor. A dog chasing after ball is faster than some of the surveying Harrier Hawks I have captured and there is definitely more movement with the dog vs. a hawk that glides.

But in those shots, did the camera misfocus or is there some degree of motion blur due to shutter speed?

Truth. Nikon Z6/Z7 AF is bad...however, what makes it horrendous is that the EVF has a 25ms lag and is prone to blackouts. What good is that crappy autofocus if you are viewing a scene that has already happened?

I love Nikon, but the first gen Z system is trash.

Either way, would it really matter? A frustrated person not willing to take the time to understand and get acquainted with a system will find it far easier to blame an inanimate object.

If we take a break from the dorkdom minutia that is often found in the nether-regions of many photography forums and vlogs, we'll find many talented photographers that make it work and do so in such amazing ways.

Jay Dickman, a Nat Geo photographer, comes to mind: Jay Dickman (@jaydickmanphoto) ? Instagram photos and videos

Shoots Olympus MFT and it's clear that he doesn't get bogged down in the keyboard warrior canned assumptions regarding Olympus:
- horrible at High ISO
- MFT is dead
- poor color rendition/color science
- spotty autofocus in low light
- 'Full Frame is the best thing ever!!!!'
- 'bigger sensor = better'

Great shots!

And that miss was probably due to the minimum focal distance of the lens.

Many AF System/Lens combinations have a tendency to struggle when the subject is moving towards the photographer. It's a consistent problem that is observed with any camera system on the marketplace.

I missed a series of a Gray Ghost (Northern Male Harrier) that was flying towards me with my D500 with a 500mm f/4 while using Group AF (which is a slightly larger array of center points). Blurry Harrier, but the birch tree (which was nowhere near the AF points) was sharp. The next run with a Female Harrier was far more successful:

Hit Rate is such a meaningless metric as it is case by case based on the:
- subject you are shooting
- how in-tune you are to the scene (your focus and reaction time)
- the conditions you are shooting in (lighting, atmospheric conditions)
- the settings on your camera
- etc.

Your camera/lens (we forget about the lens...but it is SO important to the situation) can only do so much and there really is no 'win':
- let it think too much, it may slow you down or focus elsewhere than intended
- let it think too little, it may search and search endlessly, never establishing focus (or quick to let it go)

You make a compromise of the combination you have to the setting you are in. There are good series and bad series. Sadly, you can't buy your way out of the unpredictability of photographing animals in an outdoor setting. It's part of the hobby.

The only place where the video really slipped up was when they attempted to 'rule out the body' by mounting all glass on the Sony A7R. Although the Sony is mirrorless, calibration (or whatever semblance of micro fine tuning exists within the Sony) should have been performed as all of the lenses EXCEPT the Sony interfaced with a third-party converter (eg: EOS to E, F to E, K to E).

The Pentax/Tamon 24-70 performed admirably, as it should. Tamron makes a fantastic 24-70. It definitely is better than the various incarnations of the pricier Nikon 24-70.

I think what matters most is knowing how to use your camera and maximize your gear. The D500's AF is fast, but the reason it is predictable and consistent is because I have logged over 30,000 images with the camera and have taken the time to figure out the settings and focusing modes that work best for me.

As a Nikon D500 user, I roll my eyes at statements like 'D500 is the best APS-C camera for AF'. If someone is finding success with their , that is all that matters.
