Getting aperture control block on my K-S2 :(

No of course not....I think your response clarified it. Earlier in this thread I stated that if/when the K-S2 dies, I will toss it. I paid about $400 for It new with the 18-50mm WR retractible lens which I learned later is worth $300 new by itself, so I practically got the K-S2 body for free. Knowing it is already 4 years old means I bought it understanding that it would not be a long-term solution.

However, the K-S2 has several forward thinking ideas: 3" tillable screen, wifi that works, water resistance in a plastic carbon exterior that makes it lightweight, smaller size, etc. RICOH could build on this. Also, I like the way the 20mp sensor articulates images. However, the 'value' comes at a price in less durability and life. Most of us in this Forum expect your Pentax to "take a licking'" and keep on ticking'. Not so sure with the K-S2.

That's why I recently bought a leftover New In Box K-5ii with the 18-55mm SMC DA WR kit lens for $420.00. The K-5ii is rated for at least 100,000 clicks and has the all magnesium body, top LCD, low light ISO efficiency, etc. The IQ on paper doesn't seem to make the K-5ii as advanced as the K-S2, but the results in the field speak otherwise. Personally, I thought the K-5ii was the value of the year for me. That 16mp APS-c 'sweet spot' is so good to my method of photography that I'm convinced there is magic dust in that 5/50 series sensor (my K-50 was solid as well).

Anyway, I'm glad you're not giving up on Pentax per se...If I were you and you enjoy the K-S2, a used KP with 5,ooo clicks might be a winner for you as well.

You can shoot any brand cheaply if you're willing to use their less expensive, less durable models. This is not exclusive to Pentax. As an aside, A SIGMA lens built for Pentax K mount generally costs more than the same model for CanIkOny models. I have spent a lot of $$$ on my Pentax kit (see below), but I started 17 years ago with a Pentax 10 and a 18-55mm kit lens for $340.00 used on eBay. A new K-1ii kit (w/28-105mm FA lens) will cost 2,300 (US). On the other hand, Pentax offers a K-70 with a kit lens for less than 700(US). Canon and Nikon have $400 offerings as well. Construction, features, durability and quality cost $$$. The K-S2 is an entry-level camera that has some nice features, but it's not designed or priced to last 200,000 shutter counts like its more expensive siblings (I own one & use it as a back-up--it has about 1700 shutter clicks with no issues so far).

I've said this several times here at the PF--a good photographer can use almost anything to produce great pictures (look at Brady's huge box cameras during the Civil War). But don't get angry when a value priced unit fails after 3 years. It wasn't designed for the long haul in the first place.....Buy a used K-3 with 15k shutter count for 400 (US) and it should last you for several years--or go to the Ebay graveyard and find a plethora of makes and models being dumped by point and shooters who want the next best thing or were disenfranchised by the size of the DSLR.

But simply saying you don't have $$$ so you shoot Pentax is a silly rationalization...hope you can resolve your issue with RICOH.

As I have both the K-S2 and the KP, I can tell you that the K-S2 is worth the repair. Although used as a back-up for my KP/K-1ii, the images it produces with quality glass is wonderful. The 20mp sensor is great and as a point and shoot camera, the settings Pentax utilized make it easy to handle. Is it as advanced as the KP? No--it wasn't intended to be. The fold-out LCD is a nice touch and Pentax's WiFi is was to use. I have a white/black version and it has over 1200 shots. It's a winner.

I'm glad that you're taking a pragmatic approach to this because my Pentax bodies have outperformed my old Canon and Nikon equipment for what I want and need. Every brand has good products and lenses. Ultimately, you have 3 Pentax lenses in your kit--a new body will use all of them if you need it to. Good luck in your decision.

Well Altopiet, welcome to the world. My last Mercedes had a leak in the windshield within one month of use--flooded the interior. Did that make me hate Mercedes? Of course not. Sometimes things break down...Many K-S2's have no issues after 50,000 shots. This is not an epidemic problem, but ideally, no failures should occur. If you have a failure, dump your Pentax equipment--it's your prerogative, but understand not everyone shares your perspective.

Whoa--abandon a system over a singular failure? If this camera was bought used, Buyer Beware. It's 4 years old. If it was bought new, then there is an issue here. But, many manufacturers have failures...the landfill is full of old Canons, Nikon, Sonys, et al. that failed after 3 to 5 years. The realistic life of a digital has an average of 6 years, this fellow's K-S2 failed near that mark. Also, 'good will' of Pentax sometimes remediates this issue, without declaring a full recall.

If the user likes Pentax, then he should keep shooting it and perhaps buy a lightly used flagship like a K-3 or K-5ii--honestly, they are terrific and have durability.

As a final notation: My K-S2 is still going strong, but it's my back up shooter....

Or send it to precision for a repair.....thanks for the explanation, but so far no failure (have less than 1000 clicks on the K-S2 as I use it only as a back up to the other bodies...hopefully, I got one that doesn't fail or if it does, way down the road where its resale is very little and easily replaced....

Can you check date of manufacture via the serial number on the bottom of the camera?

Just checked it--4/1/2015.........so I guess after a couple years it's gone.....is it hard to repair the solenoid if that is the issue?

REH:
As usual, way to break down a Pentax issue into useable increments. I had a K-50 and had nothing but joy: no aperture failure, no freeze-ups--just good solid photographs. On the other hand, since we bought our KP's within a week of each other, I agree that it is really well designed and such a leap in tech and overall ergonomics than the K-30/50 series.....more than pleased with it, regardless of what Pentax delivers for the 100th anniversary of ASAHI Corp.

Since my K-S2 is only about 4 months old, I'll keep an eye on this issue--it doesn't seem to be universal. Because I have the 3 Pentaxes in my 'Troika' I rotate them depending on the situation (though since I got the KP after Thanksgiving, I'm having trouble putting it down) and will presume that the issue won't appear, if it does at all, until several thousand shots have accrued....
