are you happy with switching to FF?

Believe it or not, I am not convinced that the K-1 is the true flagship. I have used all the major brands (I concentrate on Pentax and Leica now) and to me, APS-c cameras for Pentax is the 'sweet spot'. I see very little discernible difference with my KP or K-5ii vs. the K-1. Granted I don't print larger than 14 x 20, but the quality I seek id just fine at the APS-c level. Additionally, I find the Leica FF renditioning superior to the K-series....just my 2 cents.

As I have 5 of the most recent bodies from the K-5ii (it's good to have a AA sensor in the stable) to the K-3, KP, et al., I notice a slight degree of improved sharpness with the K-1 in all genres, but only when using prime lenses. FF is so smooth and predictable with primes, that I use the 15mm Irix, 35mm Pentax, 50mm f1.4 with the K-1, Occasionally, I'll add the 70mm limited and keep it uncropped as well. My APS-c bodies seem to have excellent balance over the K-1 using short zoom lenses. That was a surprise; the best deal of it is, all the lenses are compatible with each other. Additionally, I just love the K-5ii's 16mp sensor, it's really like the g-spot for APS-c bodies--balance, low light capability, reasonable sharpness up to 11' x 14" prints.

Not true...How about the new $3,000 Olympus 4/3rds body? Costs more than any Pentax b body FF or APS-c....How about the $2,800 Leica APS-c CL body? The MP, sensor and feature set, along with build quality will make the differential.

This is also a poor analogy. A crappy Full frame sensor will not be as good as an excellent top of the line APS-c or even 4/3rds....A KIA and a BMW look the same out of the showroom. The key is what is the value 5 years later? Is there a better inherent build quality? These compares are inane at best and just ridiculous at worst. Everyone is a critic. Any 14 year old with a blog can diss a product and actually hurt sales if it goes viral.
Love the one your'e with......until you replace it

Different horses for different courses....I would add a KP when you replace the K-S2, not another K-70....In reference to Normhead's weight issue....the difference to the K-1 vs. the K-3ii with grip (it feels more balanced with it on) for me is negligible. the image quality of the K-1 and the KP are several steps ahead of the K-3 and, the 36mp pops with proper lenses....The step up to FF is a material one: larger sensor attenuates the image quality of sharp lenses. With mediocre ones, the flaws become readily apparent.

When you say "artifact", was it a color shift or a pixel bleed?

For sure Clackers, I figure I'll shoot a few Harris tweed coats one with AA sim and one without and see if the moire' is even a major factor.....new sensors are not affected as heavily as older generation digital sensors. That is anecdotal but I've rarely experienced moire' recently (K-3 onward)

Thank you for the quick response. I will put the AA sim on the K-S2, then turn it off and review both shots (possibly share them here) and see what the thread users think. Good idea. As an aside, when I used my K-50 with the similar 16.3 MP AA sensor, I was delighted with results. The thing is the K-5ii is the epitome (top line) camera attached to that beloved sensor and I'd like to give it a go, particularly since I am a better photographer now than I was 6 years ago. More than enough for 8 x 11 enlargements.

See, I have a different viewpoint. I sold my k-3ii and kept the K-1ii. Why? because with the crop mode and the newer technology/IQ, its results surpass the K-3 series. The K-1 series uses all the DA lenses, but to me, Full Frame, with the exact focal length as a opposed to a 1.5x on APS-c is purer photography. Again, I am not hating on the K-3 or the K-3ii or the APS-c format (I currently have a K-S2 because the wifi and the articulating screen/20mp sensor and small(er) size is a nice compliment to the K-1ii. But if you are squeezed for space/weight, and can't bring two bodies, bring the K-1ii by itself with a DA and an FF lens and you can have both areas covered more than adequately.

NormHead:

Tell me about your k-5 with AA....does it affect the resolution and is it worth the compromise over slight moire' that can be cleaned up in post-editing?

Your point is well made and I intend to stay with APS-c. I bought a new leftover K-S2 recently with the retracting (in my opinion crappy 18-50mm lens) so I could stay in the Pentax APS-c game as my venerable, but aging K-3 was sold. When (or "if" say the naysayers) Ricoh decides to spruce up the K-3/ii line, I'll be there with my $$$. To me the KP is a sprucing up of the K-S2 in many ways, though it has some obvious strengths and advantages (as it is newer than both K-3/ii & K-S2).

That being said, I recently did the same thing with my Leica kit. I kept the M9 (had the sensor replaced: CCD is like Kodachrome) FF, and recently bought the new CL (Leica's APS-c camera) to use all that M-glass (w/adapter). Both kits have an FF and an APS-c option.

The K-1ii is really becoming my favorite camera as it is also strengthening my wrist and forearm muscles due to its girth.

The 36mp makes a big difference in cropping. It also has extreme clarity when viewing printed materials within a medium size photograph. The sensor of the new K-1ii needs less correction for me as it has excellent balance and color palette. The weight of the K-1ii is difficult at first, but the weight at times controls shake by forcing you to stiffen your forearm. (I personally hold my breath to stiffen any movement as well as having the Image stabilization activated). Cropped photos with the better quality DA lenses is also astounding. the full frame along with the large pixels has great depth of field and the viewfinder cropped shows other areas allowing one to change the frame of the photo and improve your image.

The longer I spend time with the K-1ii, the more I'm pleased with Ricoh/Pentax and the system itself. I am so bullish on the K-1ii, I am sellng my K-3 and purchased a new K-S2 leftover with the funky 18-50mm collapsible lens (for $380) and, I have to tell you it is a great back-up for the K-1ii. Those of us that maligned the K-S2 probably never spent time with it. Its excellent APS-c sensor (20.4 mp) is excellent. It also has most of the K-3 features and the small difference in mp power is not that big of a problem.

K-1ii with the DA lens crop function is the best camera I've ever owned from any manufacturer (including my stellar Leica typ 240/M9 kit). Using DA lens offers little fallout in clarity and color palette. The FF lenses produce the full clarity and power of 36,4 mp. Even smaller reproductions of photos have denser clarity in smaller print/detail (i.e., 8.5 x 11). At 13 x 19, the clarity is professional and surprises me. Using fast 50mm 1.4 prime lens yields excellent results. Love it. I bought 6 FF lenses (3 primes 15mm, 35mm & 50mm, along with 3 teles: Tamron 25-25mm mini, 28-105mm kit lens & 70-300mm SIgma). But the real joy is using my several DA lenses. It's a total kit. just wonderful all around.
I've attached a few samples so you can check the exif data for comparison.
The first two were taken with the K-1ii in crop mode using (intentionally) the inexpensive and much maligned 50-200mm DA lens; Note the 2nd photo of the dog was cropped by 60% (still excellent even with a cheap DA lens) & the 3rd was taken with the K-3 and the acclaimed 18-135mm DA lens. I still think the K-1ii delivers a bit more on the palette and overall.
CONCLUSION: Buy the K-1ii, you won't miss the K-3/ii one bit. If you're "jonesing" for an APS-c camera, buy a leftover/demo K-S2 to tide you over, but I assure you, many K-1/ii fans aren't switching back once the new rumored K-3/ii replacement hits the market.

Agreed...I haven't used the 15mp crop sensor on the K-1ii yet because the resolution of that 36mp FF is so sweet!! It rivals my Leica M in every way. Sweet color palette, sharp corners, rich detail...Giddy Up !!! I love my K-1ii

Me too....I still use my old Canon FTBn (film) and a Leica M9 (digital-new sensor)--both totally manual and both produce excellent images as I frame them to my liking. the Canon match-needle system is easy to use and the 50mm 1.8 glass is awesome. The Leica is ridiculous, yet it is not good for fast action....that;s why to me it's all relative about Pentax having slow AF--it's plenty fast in the K-1ii and I get great "action" photos...Below is a photo I took on the PATCO train from New jersey to Philadelphia, through a tinted safety glass (dirty) window on a 45 mph train with my K-3..plenty fast. The photo itself is not great but the clarity of the foggy skyline through that distorted and dirty train window underscores my point--Pentax may not have state of the art auto-focus, but in the right hands, it's blazing fast

---------- Post added 10-26-18 at 01:01 PM ----------

sorry that train pic was with my K-S2 not my K-3 and it's still fast enough...

Excellent statement Normhead….I augmented my preference of Pentax when they added the K-1ii,,,It's a beast and I agree for in tight non-cropped resolution, it's my king. However, I wish it was a tad lighter because I get some minor blur (even with the stabilization) in slow shutter speeds. I hate going over 6400 ISO because noise and minor artifacts begin creeping in and I love more precise exposures. In any event, I enjoyed your foilage pics very much.

Happy I have a K-1 ii to go with my current stable of APSc cameras (K-3 & K-S2). In fact, here is a pic of all three wearing my favorite lens for each one. The K-1ii with the 28-135mmFA, the K-3 with the 18-135mm DA & the K-S2 with the 16-45mm DA.
They all have a place and the K-3 is still going strong after 5 years !!

Having owned several Pentaxes starting with the 10D, K-50, K-S2 (still own), K-3 (still own), K-3ii and the K-1ii, I am a bit disappointed in the K-1 performance. I had to adjust every lens I had with a SnyderLensCalc adjustment meter (another $80) because the K-1ii sharpness compared to the APS-c K-3 (with the 18-135mm ) was better. Also, with the FF lenses, the K-1 can be a burden on my old shoulders after a full day in the field.

While I am not disappointed in the K-1ii, it is a heavy body and for most of my street photography I don't need the 36 mp (I only enlarge up to 13" x 19"). I'm keeping it however, as I believe new firmware will augment the camera and to date, RICOH has not updated the K-3ii (I don't count the KP as a true upgrade) so FF may be the present to the future....

Have had a K-50 and a K-3ii--recently traded up to a K-1 ii and frankly, the results are similar. A 24mp APS-C camera like the K-3ii is a serious tooling though it lacks a bit of the DOF of the K-1ii, I find many photos with the K-1 ii are lacking in certain areas. Part of it is that Pentax has great quality DA lenses developed over a long period of time. The new FA lenses are lacking in volume and in my opinion are not as sharp as some of the DA lenses. Thus, the K-1 ii is currently not reaching its potential. Of all the FF lenses I have purchased thus far, the 18-105mm kit lens produces the best results.
Also, the aftermarket has some great gently used DA lenses that will help you build your kit more economically.
