They're a really impressive (and very large!) sculpture that was created to celebrate some work that was done to revise the Forth & Clyde canal across the centre of Scotland. Well worth a visit if in the area.
We stayed overnight in our motorhome and were able to get there and take some photos while there was some blue in the sky. Several other photographers with tripods arrived after it was fully dark however I thought that was a bit late as the pictures are better when there is some interest in the sky.
This is another, also from last night - this time while they were lit up in red (they cycle through various colours):

K1 and Tokina ATX-Pro 80-200 F2.8.
My son was shooting the same scene with my old K10D and a Tamron 70-300 but hasn't processed his shots yet, but it'll be interesting to see how our results compare!
