Exactly, quite often we have bad weather here because clouds follow the course of La Loire. We have some rainy days but usually it doesn't last very much;)

I try to explain briefly ... It 's a mix of chance and a little patience, ... and a lot of loss (waste) shots !
Not a problem with digital photography
So I live near "la Loire" river where storms are used to stay a little, it was a particular night with no wind, a lot of electricity in the air, but no real danger.
And there were lightnings during 2 or three hours every 30 seconds to 1 minute (relatively far from home). I started with no tripod, I was not always happy, a lot of trial and error with the settings of the camera,
I tried to find a good balance with the high lights, so photos were sometimes dark but still seeing the lightning flash (raw photo)
Then I took the tripod, kept the good setting (in manual) and managed to keep a 30 sec aperture (I almost got a light at one shot out of two), I used my two batteries (with grip).
I was at F6,3 if I recall.
After that, it's a question of choice, sorting and selection, and of course Post Processing (lightroom), mainly in the sky.
These are my two favourites that night (maybe the first one is handheld)
