Precious resources? Let's not pretend the roadmap update *for the 70-210/4* is more than a ten minute job... Not even DPR would complain about that

On my 24" monitor, it takes blowing the image to about 1 m equivalent print to get to the point where the look is clearly grainу. The detail is impressive - not sure how much is sensor and how much is lens though, the K-1 is already overkill for me with a "kit" D FA 28-105 :o

I forgot about that. No chroma noise means no ugly weird purple dots, so that's great. Whether that "justifies" the price tag is... well, irrelevant. It's not that much more expensive (about 10% extra) than the M10P, while having a 40 MP sensor instead of 24. It's a Leica, it will cost an arm and a leg and have something that us poor plebeians won't be able to understand* by virtue of being poor :D

*I was this close to scoring an R3 Mot Electronic with Summicron-R 50mm lens (I think it was the f/2.8) on an auction that I thought empty but of course two people dropped by last minute and drove the price upwards of 300€ :hmm:

As Phoebus said, the lack of filter increases the light sensitivity of the sensor (by about 1 stop), so the "base" ISO of the Monochrom is rated higher - it says ISO 160 but it has the noise and detail of a colour sensor at ISO 80. It is, however, a more cumbersome b/w since you cannot change the colour channels in post, so having filters in front of the lens might become again a necessity.

If I'm honest, all the fat fifties are incredibly sharp corner to corner wide open and all of that technical stuff.

The D FA*, from all images I've seen, has the better rendering, I think. It's silky smooth in and out of focus, the bokeh is just so calm.

I know, I know; I was being sarcastic :o

That's why I said "for my needs"; I'm a city/landscape guy so I don't usually need fast apertures, and for portraits I just use the Tammy 90/2.5 which, on top of being a macro, has great bokeh and so it works as a poor man's 85/1.8.

As for high ISO, absolutely agreed; the K-1 is a beast there so I'm not afraid of shooting at 6400-8000 if that is what is needed to get the shot.

An f/2.8 lens is great if you want an extra kilogram on your back. I don't, my 70-210/4.5 is enough for my needs - and I am looking forward to this new lens. If only, to have something to look forward to in the future

A couple of older RMC lenses do make a very nice rainbow flare effect - if you are into it. I have to upload some of the pics when I'm home.

Ebay.de shows me half a dozen copies sold in the last month; around 450€ on average which sounds about right. Good glass generally sells.

"Can't you just use the same parameters you used for the previous work"
"Yes, but that doesn't mean they will still be optimal"

I've lost count of how many times something like that has played out in my life...

I expect them to go around 1400, in between Sigma and the big guys (but closer to the big guys). Large and extremely well corrected but I agree, trust DPR to blow any imperfection out of proportion... if they don't pretend like the lens doesn't even exist; they've already done this with the DA* 11-18/2.8.
I think Pentax might put a lot of emphasis on making fantastic focus-to-OOF transitions like they did with the D FA* 50/1.4.

I specifically went for the M20/4 because I cannot be bothered to carry half a kilogram of bulky UWA lens. I couldn't care less about the corners, the pancake is already better than it has any right to be.

EDIT: The 17mm Adaptall (or the Tokina equivalent) was also on my list, but I ended up going for something truly pocketable to just shove in there next to the 28-105.

So the CP+ lenses are different? if that's the case, I'm betting on either 16-50/2.8 and 50-135/2.8 or just the standard zoom plus wide angle D FA prime.

85 mm on APS-C is more like 127 mm, which is even a more comfortable length. Admittedly, it's a bit on the longer side for portraits, but considering I love both my Tamron 90/2.5 and M135/3.5 on my K-1...

The M135/3.5 is a bit less flexible -after all, cropping is easier than inventing outside-the-frame image bits- but if you have the space (around 5-6 m away from the subject) it's a great perspective for portraits.

I doubt it. The Sony 85/1.4 GM's MSRP was $1799, while the Sony Zeiss FE Planar T✻ 50mm f/1.4 MSRP was $1499. Sure, Sony Zeiss vs Sony GM, but disregarding that, we are looking at a 20% increase in the price of the 85/1.4 compared to the 50/1.4, so similar to the other manufacturers.

I don't see more than $1599 for the Pentax happening, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's $1400 or 1450. Not cheaper than that for sure, though.

And the Nikons are 1.8. We almost have a linear correlation there that points to $1500 :p

Applying the calculation to the Canon RF lenses gives around $1408 for the D FA★ 85, but that's because both are more than twice the price ($2699 and $2299) of the respective Sigmas (and almost twice of the Pentax, huh). Applying it to the Nikon Z 1.8 primes, the Pentax would be $1600, but the fixed costs make such calculations very easy to skew.

Oh, absolutely. It's a balancing act. I am also not knowledgeable enough to know whether such a "cover your backside" move with a lawyer could get you, maybe not the best of both worlds, but at least a way to stop other people from patenting it (although if that's the case, it more or less still bites you because now they can do the same without you having legal recourse, it becomes a free-for-all).

Because the moment you file the information is public. "Trade secrets" are not patented precisely to protect their secrecy. I am not sure how the patent laws work in those cases though.

As Mistral said, nope. You normally start working before even filing the patent.
