I think you'll be pleased. The MB SATA controller in my old (2007) PC died and I've almost completed my new build. Just tinkering a bit around the edges. I'm not into overclocking or water cooling, and I'm not a gamer (obviously ). SQL Server and Visual Studio get used as often as photo processing, so this is not very sexy. But it's very fast :D. i7-7700, 32GB RAM, 512GB Samsung 960 Pro NVMe M.2 for OS/Apps, 2TB RAID1 (I'm using the WD Black from my old PC), Asus Prime Z270A MB. Win 10 Pro.

I use Corel ASP Pro, which used to be Bibble Pro. Bibble claimed that they took advantage of multiple processors. As far as I can tell from quick tests, they still do. Image editing changes happen instantly.

BTW, if you want to see real water cooling, check out IBM mainframes from the 1970s and 1980s.

I used to drive my 1970 Mini like that (no clutch once rolling). I wondered if I could do it, so I had to find out

We have to drive to Sydney (2.5 to 3 hours) to find a store that has more than a token Pentax presence, and we don't have many serious tackle shops. But we do have many places to buy bait. The local Corlette Store (best hamburgers around) has a large freezer full of bait and is just one example. If there's a group of 3 or 4 shops anywhere around the area, one or more of them will sell bait.

We also have to put up with a great climate (it was 20C today with 22 to 24 forecast for the next few days and it's mid winter), a magnificent view over the port and out to the Pacific, and very little traffic except for the summer tourist season. However, traffic lights were just installed at a T junction. All we had before this was lights at a pedestrian crossing. We had to drive 34km out of town to to find traffic lights, and that was a once-a-month thing. We could put up with that. It was a novelty. Now I might have to encounter traffic lights about twice a month. The whole character of the area is under threat. ;);)

Regards,
Richard.

Mine, with Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens, is sitting in the glass-fronted cabinet near my desk. I bought in in 1977.

I agree with you and I often skip one or two or even three gears. My Saab's 4th (out of 6) is easily good for 200kmh/125mph. It will also accelerate away from 25kmh/16mph in 4th, on the flat, without any strain. It's got great flexibility, so 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th is a common sequence to get up to 80/50 when I'm in casual mode. 1st, 2nd, 6th sometimes, just because I can :) 6th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd is a common sequence approaching roundabouts on 80/50 roads. I think that some of the Ferrari or Lamborghini gate systems stopped you skipping gears. Maybe your car is trying to emulate that.

A higher wattage power supply does not use more electricity than a lower wattage one. It's the components powered by the PSU that determine how much power will be consumed. 80% should be an absolute max. It's better to use a PSU that's running somewhere between 40% to 60% of its theoretical maximum.

One reason I'm using a more powerful PSU is that I got tired of less powerful PSUs over-heating and failing. My box runs cool and it's almost completely silent.

That looks quite interesting. Is this a standard Dell build or did you put it together? The workhorse computer that I built in 2010 is still running well, but I think that it's time to build something new. It's an i5 with 16GB of DDR3 1066/1333 memory. The box is a Lancool PC-K60 tower that has big, slow-speed fans all over the place. It never gets hot. Your 250W power might be a little low. I used an Antec TruPower 550. You can never have too much power.

Richard.

Pentax A 35-105mm f/3.5 from Japan on ebay. It seems to be in excellent + condition. I'm looking forward to using a 30 year old lens on my brand new K-1.

Unlike many of you, I have never been able to find anything Pentax in a thrift shop. I need to find a better class of thrift shop. On the other hand ...

My K-1 was delivered 3 days ago. :D:D:D:D:D

The game has just changed. I just got an email from my middle brother with the subject = "Addiction". The message said that my sister-in-law had stopped blaming me now that she realises he has a mental illness. As soon as I saw the subject, I knew what was coming and I was right. Aaaagh! The attachment was a selfie taken into a mirror with his new K-1.

I suppose that it is my fault, in some ways. My brother bought his first Pentax, a Spotmatic, in the 1960s when he was still in high school. He acquired a few lenses and still has the old Taks and Super Taks. He'd been quite content using high-end digital point and shoots until I went to England in 2012 with my K-5 and a few lenses including a DA* 16-50. He liked this shot of Jamie so much, that he went out and bought a K-5 and an M42 converter and then a DA* 16-50.

My sister-in-law blamed me because, as she said, they couldn't afford to put food on the table. Yeah. Right He started upgrading to just about every new upgrade body that was released. Naturally, I got the blame. Of course. But, hey, I explained that a man's got to do what a man's got to do. What more could she ask for?

I think that I'll be able to resist. Please wish me luck :D

Regards,
Richard.

I understand. I was mostly happy with my K200D, my first DSLR. I could have done with a better focusing screen (I was used to Nikon and Nikkormat film cameras), but the picture quality was surprisingly good. But then I saw a review of the then new K5 in late 2010 and was blown away by the quality of the low-light, high ISO shots. I phoned around the camera shops in my area until I found one and I bought it the same day. I'm sure that I paid a lot more than I would have a year later, but ...

From what I've seen of the K1, it may be a game changer. It's not an immediate, must have, ignore the cost item, but I'm very tempted.

Regards,
Richard.

A lot of LEDs. We bought this house in October last year. Halogen downlights in all the main living areas. Mix that with high ceilings and bulbs don't get replaced. Everything was replaced with LEDs today. We'll get the invoice in a few days. That will be exciting :D

Richard.

The timber floors are brilliant. Treat them well. The rest of it is, as you said, a bit of a fixer-upper. But it looks livable.

Very nice. Congratulations.

I have a FT3 with 50mm 1.4 that I bought new in Hong Kong in 1977. AI lens and body, but the lens still has the old rabbit ears. Mine's matt black and, because it was for the international market, it's a Nikkormat. You could buy Nikomats in Hong Kong at the time, but they did not have the world-wide warranty that came with the Nikkormats. It looks like yours has hardly been used. My "leatherette" case is badly worn.

They were good cameras.

I feel your pain, Stan. Our central heating furnace quit a couple of weeks ago. Black smoke stains on the furnace and the wall above it (it's an external furnace) and melted insulation on the wiring inside the furnace sort of says that it's time to get a new one. What with organising quotes and trying to make sure that they are viable plus traveling interstate for my M-i-L's funeral, it's going to take another week before we can get the new furnace installed. And it's winter here. Extreme cold. OK, it may have been 75F yesterday, but it got down to 59F today. It's tough. I was going to buy a Hirsch performance kit for my car. Ah well.

Don't worry. It will:lol:

Before I hijacked it to use as a Hyper-V Server and loaded Windows Server 2008R2, I had a Core i5 750 running Win 7 Pro 64 that I built a couple of years ago with 8GB of 1600 RAM, no SSD but a 1TB standard Samsung disk, a low-end graphics card (Asus 512MB 4350 Silent) and Gigabyte P55A-UD3P (1156) MB. Bibble Pro and Corel ASP were quite fast. Before I installed Server 2008R2, I upgraded the RAM to 16GB still running Win 7 just to see how it performed with the extra RAM. Corel ASP flew :D

I kept the 1TB Win 7 disk "just in case" and put in a 1.5TB system disk + 2X2TB storage disks in RAID1. It makes quite a handy little Hyper-V Server for my home office. Virtual XP-Pro machines ready in case (when ) my P4 boxes die. Virtual domain controller with AD - when I get the time an the urge. Cool.

Bought one of these Victorinox Altmont 2.0 Dual-Compartment Monosling | Victorinox Luggage at Melbourne airport on the way to England on Monday. I needed to reduce the weight of my official carry-on item and this fits a K5 with DA*16-50 with room to spare for e.g. FA-77 in its pouch + passport + book. Just what you need "under the seat ahead" so that you don't have to get your big-bag carry-on out of the overhead compartment mid-flight. It's not padded like a proper camera bag, so you need to take extra care, but it doesn't advertise that you've got some expensive stuff. The ladies can have a jumbo handbag, so why shouldn't us blokes have a jumbo manbag?

I almost forgot ... the main compartment is tall and wide enough to fit two bottles of wine :D

I was looking at that and thinking that it looked very desirable and then I remembered that someone thought it would be a good idea to entertain their children by playing see-saws with my Linn Basik (yeah yeah. I know. Cheap as.) tone arm and seeing how hard they could bounce my Garrott P77 cartridge off the arm support. It was not a happy ending and I haven't had the heart to try and get it fixed yet. At least the little vandals didn't play frisbees with the glass platter. And now my CD player has decided that it doesn't need a left channel. In some ways it's good that I'm developing cloth ears in my old age.

Still, not as bad as a guy I worked with who lost his LP12 and all his vinyl when a neighbour who wanted his land to expand a business sent in hit men who tied him and his wife up and burned down the house with them in it. They were lucky to escape only slightly singed.

Richard (sorry for the convoluted hims and thems, but I think it makes sense).
