I actually missed that he was ten. Or assumed it was a typo. Get something you can play with together. :)

Since Arpe didn't pick up on this, ...if you haven't gone off to the store yet, (What kind is it, anyway?) a good CPL is going to be commonly-useful, sometimes ND filters, (neutral density, essentially they just remove light) if you're a real wide-aperture or slow shutter-speed fan... (Some people use them a lot: I personally don't have much call for them for a combination of reasons and preferences we needn't get into here, ) Graduated neutral densities are also pretty useful if you do a lot of outdoor stuff where there's time to set up. These are basically the filter-set that can do things post-processing in digital cannot. (I'd say that diffusers also are like this, as well. And some special effects.)
Got hoods? Putting a good hood on that 55 will be a biggie for you all around. :)
Batteries and cards are a very practical suggestion, but if it's a gift, well, it's always nice to use that for something the giver can see you use or see the results of.
One idea might be, even, to use that to have some nice enlargements made or some such, if you've started getting photos you like.
Or more 'personal' stuff like if there's a bag you like or a strap or things there.
I think the last time my sweetie tried to give me photo-stuff, I used the gift card for some film and chemistry, which at that point I wouldn't have had without. (We were running a lot leaner at that point.) Seemed to make everyone happy.
