It seems like they're all about Iphones down here. They wave those things everywhere, tend to give cameras of any kind cold looks at best.

Even since I've been here, cameras of any kind have kind of vaporized. Occasionally you meet a Canonian talking about like thousands of dollars of kit he ain't carrying, that's close to it, it seems. :)

Actually did run into another Pentaxian recently, also not carrying. :)

I actually saw someone toting Pentax on the news last week: something about an inquiry into a mine disaster. Looked like a Limited lens, even. :)

Ah, don't let that kind of thing get you down. If you aren't confident in your tools, some helpful other person sure won't be. She probably just heard a lot about Canon cause they sponsor all the nature shows and all. :)

If you act all downcast or something, that'll send some other message, and most people will be taking their cues from *you* on a shoot. They're probably just curious. :)

Well, for people who live by credit cards and can't cover their own backups, that's an advantage of sorts...

If you've got gigs that are paying *that* much, the option to drop six or seven hundred on a D50 and kit zoom or whatever is kind of open to anyone. Personally, my backup is at *the least* tucking an ME Super body in the bag. If not running home for Mamiya and/or the Canon kit and the brick of Tri-X in the freezer. ;) ('Hey, it's your lucky day, you get old school tonight, clients,' :) )

If you're talking just digital, a soon-to-be-third-generation back d300 for backup *still* costs what upgrading my primary to a K-5 probably would. I could back *myself* up with another K20d or maybe a K-7, or a K-x, for the price of one of those K-mart specials. :)

Pro services are *nice,* but mostly for *big* kit that constitutes real overhead, like a several-grand lens or a several-grand body. I mean, yeah, you never know what might happen, but you pays your money and takes your choice. While it's certainly *nice* to have replacements, the fact is it's not worth shooting a lower grade of machine for the same money *all the time* just so you can potentially spend that money *twice* on what isn't what you want to be shooting in the first place. :)

It's not to say there aren't reasons I *might* go Nikon (with at least an FE tucked in my bag) if I were taking certain kinds of gigs and could afford it to begin with, but what Wal-mart has on offer sure wouldn't be a deciding factor in the equation. :)

Aaaah, now *there's* an appeal of weathersealed telezooms. Canikon nameplates don't protect against spittakes. ;)

You know that you're in a niche market when people are wanting a burst of 12 RAW images.... From a pink camera. :)

Heehee. I'd just say, 'Well, when you know what you need, you only need a few of em.' :) Hey, Pentax makes the *right* lenses for me.'

(Not that I *have* all of those, but that'd be the same wherever I went: at least these FA Limiteds and others *exist. :) *

Probably! But I usually say hello to anyone who seems like 'photo people' under circumstances when it's remotely-appropriate. (Appropriate, perhaps meaning, 'Appearing to be interested in photography-and-not-too-busy') I actually consider it a fringe benefit of using this stuff: sometimes the brand tends to make a good ice-breaker, people will ask you about it, especially if they know the name from film and stuff. Ready way to strike up a conversation, and all.

It can be kind of the fun part. It seems the Internet gets all brand-adversarial, but it's less so in person, at least among people you actually meet. People you don't meet, who knows why. :)

As for the average Pentaxian IQ, we may actually beat the spread: people don't *usually* make the unusual choice without thinking about it a lot in at least in *some* way. There may be other intelligent choices for many to make, (and big IQ is no proof against being *wrong,* of course,) but I can't think of too many particularly *stupid* reasons to go with Pentax. There could even be some kind of comic genius about putting a purple and orange K-x behind like four grand worth of long FA* and giggling madly while taking family snaps. :)
