What fixer do you use?

Yep, though, arrangements do seem to vary a fair bit locally.

Down here, there's at least periodic days when you can drop stuff off, and my understanding is that some cities can even handle the metals: I was talking to a wastewater treatment expert we know at some point back there. I couldn't remember off the top of my head what the silver salts of concern were at the time, as I recall, but it seems some of the things they're doing about heavy metals in some places are pretty promising for us, too. (Just as a general impression.)

I kind of wonder if you could actually electroplate things with used fixer if you were to add some current, say, with a little PV cell or something. :) (I presume the steel wool needs all that surface area to do without, but I'm speculating wildly, here. It's my intention to have some kind of system in place when I get really settled in, both for the photo lab an any finishes/solvents from the workshop that might not be too eco-friendly. (All things being equal, I might look to lower-VOC stuff and natural finishes for the woodwork and stuff, but I've tended to use a lot of salvaged stuff like that, in the past, and at least without a proper workshop, I've pretty invariably resorted to spray cans a lot, which is unsatisfying on those counts. I could even find myself using a compressor or something, though, if I can work something out. But I digress. :) )

I've been curious about the possibilities of making a passive-solar (or even PV+heating coil assisted) evaporation scheme for the photo chemistry, so as to get things down to a solid form for disposal I don't use chemistry in huge *quantity,* so it probably wouldn't have to be a huge apparatus or anything. :)

Oh, speaking of fixers, I'm currently using 'Silvergrain Clearfix Neutral,' (Freestyle carries it.) It's non-hardening, comes in a liquid for dilution, and is based on Ammonium Thiosulfate and Sodium Sulfite.

Supposed to be an eco-option both in terms of toxicity and requiring less wash-water and time (Which was a pretty big concern here when I originally bought it and is still a nice piece of responsibility, I think. )

Seems to work nicely, so far, and as I'd kind of hoped by going non-hardening fix down here, my negs aren't curling like unruly tape measures as they have been since I arrived, and are flattening much more quickly. :)
