You don't think that Carl Zeiss 50mm Makro-Planar and DFA 100mm WR are good FF lenses?

Buy it from Sweden. CyberPhoto has the kit at 2600$ with free battery grip.
Though they had even better offer a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: nevermind with current exchange rate it's close to 3000$

Thank you!
This is what my plan will be if I decide to go FF.
I have pretty decent FF lenses already would "only" have to swap 16-85mm to 28-105mm. And maybe add a 20mm prime at some point.

I have got a lot of valuable comments in this thread and I am thankful for them. Though I still haven't made up my mind.
At least I have until February to decide. So I can look for good sales and wait and see if there will be a new APC-S camera coming out this year.

That's a good point. Possible longevity is one of the reasons I started to consider K1. I am hoping to keep my next body at least 3 years but hopefully even 5.

- True the battery life would probably not be an huge issue if I have at least two batteries.
- No, I haven't hold one but I have read that for some people the grip is a bit small and some parts of it are not as sturdy as K3. It's hard to find a place where I could hold one :/
- True, even though the sensor would not be as good as K1's it's probably more than good enough for me.

You should have stopped here and not continue saying you prefer your K1! :D

And some things that I think would be important for me and which I would gain either with K1 or KP:
- better AF, PLM, wifi and focus peaking

Yeah, and I am also a bit turned off of the KP's smaller battery and build quality/ergonomics.

I made a small Pros and Cons list between KP and K1 for me

K1 - Pros
- Great sensor (ISO, resolution and dynamic range)!
- My FF lenses would produce the field of view they were designed for.
- Narrower DOF.

K1 - Cons
- harder to cover ultra wide angle (and telephoto).
- expensive (would have to swap 16-85mm to 28-105mm and probably get an ultra wide prime).
- Heavy

KP - Pros
- easier to cover ultra wide (and telephoto).
- light

KP - Cons
- no top lcd, small battery
- not as "pro" build quality and ergonomics
- Not as good sensor as K1 has :p

So maybe next APS-C flag ship model could be the best option for me. Though I am worrying about price, at the moment KP is 500$ (a week ago only 400$) more than K1 and I assume that if the new flagship is released before the end of the year it would be fairly close to K1 in price. For some reason I feel like I wouldn't mind paying 1500$ for good FF camera but it's harder to justify for paying more than 1200$ for APS-C camera, even though they are starting to be reeeallly good.

I mostly agree with you.
Though in Sweden K1 is only 400 usd more than kp!

As I said earlier if kp would be in k3 - style body, it could be a good option for me.

And I am still wondering how much I would benefit of K1's sensor....
Also would really like to try 50mm Makro-planar and 31mm on ff. But that alone is not enough to justify the cost.

This would be the smart thing to do :/

---------- Post added 14-07-17 at 19:09 ----------

A lot of good advice and comments and I thank you for that.
Since KP really isn't an option for me it will come down to K3II successor, K1 or keep shooting with my beloved K5IIs.

Since I already have several high quality ff lenses and I am not interested in telephoto or action I am leaning towards K1. But I still have until early next year to make the decision. And look for a good Black Friday or Christmas sale.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated :)

Hi, I have considered KP and I like the sensor but I don't like smaller grip, worse build quality, lack of top lcd and smaller battery.

As I stated in my post, I would use 16-85mm on K1 in crop mode only until I would be able to sell it and acquire 28-105mm. I would probably never get 55-300mm unless going for Safari or something. And all my other lenses are FF compatible.

Thanks for your comment!

Hello all!

I am trying to decide whether I should upgrade to K1 or stay with APS-C cameras and would greatly appreciate your input and experiences about the matter (and I think that it might help me to write my reasoning down).

At the moment I have a 3 year old K5IIs, it’s a great camera but sometimes I wish that it would have a better high ISO, dynamic range and a bit more megapixels.

I prefer wide/ normal angle over telephoto. I mostly photograph landscapes and casual portraits.

At the moment I have a 31mm ltd, 50mm Makro-Planar, DFA 100mm WR and 16-85mm. Most of these would work just fine on K1 and I was planning of using 16-85mm on crop-mode (still would get the same sensor size as on K5IIs) until I can sell it and get a 28-105mm.

Size is fairly important for me since I mostly enjoy photographing while hiking and traveling. But K1 is “only” 250g heavier than K5IIs and 28-105mm is actually lighter than 16-85mm. So my FF kit would not be that much heavier than my old kit, though it would cover slightly smaller field of view.
I would probably need to buy a small 20mm lens at some point to cover that end. I would not buy any heavy full frame telephoto lenses. But if I would at some point need more reach I could just grab a 55-300mm PLM and use it in crop mode.

I was also considering waiting for K3III since it would probably have a great sensor but I feel like with not that much more money I would get quite a bit more with K1 and would not lose that much. Since I am not into telephoto stuff (at least not at the moment). Though it would be sad to lose my 16-85mm, I really enjoy that lens. Is DFA 28-105mm as good?

I am mostly worried about covering the 20-24mm focal length which seems to be easier to do (small and not super expensive) on APS-C than on K1 (at least at the moment). But I am also quite excited about trying my current lenses on FF and about extra control over DOF.

Sorry about quite messy post but hopefully you can follow my train of thought.
If you have any comments I would be happy to hear them!
