If you're sure the batteries aren't flat, the meter is dead. Sorry. Even on bodies that do not work well with alkalines, the meter will at least move and meter with any battery, even if not accurately. You probably do not need an adapter. It's a little bit smaller than the usual battery but if you can't make it fit, you can wrap some paper or some sort of rubber ring around it to pad it out.

WeinCells are overpriced and unnecessary. I just use 1.4 V 675 zinc-air batteries designed for hearing aids, which are basically the same thing as the WeinCells but in a slightly smaller form factor.

The Spotmatic SP is not supposed to be picky about batteries though. It should work fine with alkalines.

I just got this in the mail. I'm so incredibly happy with this purchase. It's in like-new condition (there is a very small hair in the viewfinder, but that's all -- otherwise, looks barely used!) for $37. The camera feels GREAT, and the viewfinder, while perhaps a tad small by film SLR standards, is bright and large enough for me.

I already love this camera after ten minutes of owning it. Everything feels right. Fits in my hand like a glove. Wow. AF seems speedy enough (and makes the exact same beep noise that my K100D Super makes, feels like home :o) Can't wait to run some film through this thing.

EDIT: Oh man, it reads the focal length info from the lens and the viewfinder shutter speed display changes color based on whether the speed is safe to handhold or not. That's a cool feature. Also, AF in low light seems at least as good, or even better than my K100D Super. It seems to act more "determined" in the way it searches for focus. Huh.
