I suspect that these "recommended" cameras are because the teacher doesn't actually know anything about any other, or is unable to work out the basics which ought to apply whichever camera you happen to own.

Dave, you are clearly a much better teacher than the one referenced earlier!

Last year I left the camera club I had got involved with, because of a whole lot of things. I didnt leave because I was the only Pentax shooter, but I did feel a bit lonely. I've been able to go back this year and be darned if there aren't two more K-5 users there. YAY!!

I wish I hadn't looked but I couldnt help myself. About 2 minutes of genuine review and 10 of unadulterated crap. I wish he would grow up.

I'm using a couple of MC/MD lenses with an adapter. Has to be full manual but no big deal and I don't really care that I can't tell you what the exact focal length is, on my K-5.

Lens 1= MC Rokkor 50mm f/1.4

Lens 2= Formula5 200mm f/3.5

I don't use them a lot because they are both very heavy, being all metal construction, and BIG, but they work.

Whatever it was must have been fixed (in the forum perhaps... someone may have hit the wrong button). I was curious so I looked in my own tapatalk and there was an initial "PenPen has been banned" but it disappeared very quickly to present the normal profile...

And here's why you don't see many Pentax users in the wild, in Newcastle AU.

Thats the only advertising for Pentax in that shop and its old: its behind you as you walk in, and above your head as you walk out with your shiny new Canon.

I've only ever met one other Pentax user in the wild, and he didnt have his camera with him, but he did spot mine (a K200D at the time) and introduced himself... and that would be Bramela (Bruce). I have never seen any Pentax users in any of the places I go to, normally. Mostly its Canon.

Interestingly, I would probably not have considered Pentax if it weren't for two or three intervening factors... 1) There were no current Minolta models in existence that would take my old lenses... and nor would Sony. 2) A friend who had a K1000 years back when she was doing a fine Arts course absolutely swore by them, and I loved her work and 3) the startup cost for Pentax was half what it was for any other brand, and I got weather sealing and a top LCD into the bargain. It was a no brainer. I didnt really learn about the rest of what Pentax had to offer until I began hanging out in this forum.

This is exactly what I did with my K200D and K-x (now sold). JB had the best deals, with the local Camerahouse wanting nearly half as much again for just the basic camera + kit lens.

As for buying lenses... forget it. Even the local Camerahouse doesnt stock Pentax lenses: they have old stock for huge prices and prefer to push Canon instead. Newcastle AU appears to be a Canon town.
