I get the principle, thanks for that explanation.

Looking at the images at that site... I dunno, perhaps my eyes are worse than I thought. I just do not see that those images are better than many others I have seen which are not stacked. *shrug*. Its probably just me. Anyway, I don't have the gear, nor am ever likely to, so I'll just make do :)

The increase in ISO also increases the background light, so a lot of editing would be needed. I went to 3200 in some of my shots but was happier at 800 and 1600 with the results. Have not yet tried anything more than 3200. (Haven't been out either, the moon is now going to be about for a couple of weeks, I'll wait for the next dark)

This looks pretty good to me... why stack? I'm quite serious, I actually don't get why stacking is required when I see shots like this (or my own) when I have seen quite a few stacked shots and really... for the time and effort required, I just don't see the benefit in the final result. There's a very definite benefit in using a telescope... but stacking.. not convinced.

Agreed (said she, who's only been out twice). I would go as open as you can. In my case with the 15mm, that's f/4, and with the 43mm its f/1.9. I'm planning to do a run with the 15mm again, because of the SR still being on (I had not used the timer) so even though the 15mm shots were "ok" I think they could be better. I'm looking for shorter exposure and possibly even 3200 ISO. I'm doing trial and error. Investigation of costs of astro equipment has revealed I need to make do... so I am making do.

Your English is just fine!

Stacking is something I just never thought to do... but in order to get the shots exactly, you would *need* the tracker and mount, and thats beyond me, financially, at the moment. However, theres a neat telescope shop in my city, not too far from me, so I rather think I might be seen hanging around there a lot over the next few months

Noted that DeepSkyStacker which I have seen others mention, is only available for Windows... I guess I'll start seeking something for OSX. :)

Wow... 30 frames??? I guess you would need that mount and tracking system if you are going to do that. Love the super wide, that's magic!

Thank you *very* much. Yes, it is of genuine concern, I am getting on a bit, my health is in decline and I live alone so nobody would notice for a day or 6, so this would be excellent. (and I wonder if there is something like this available for the iphone...)

Thanks again :)

LOL! Not really. I live in the suburbs but not far from some country roads. Its pretty busy out there and the lights from cars get in the way, light pollution +++, this spot is just a layby on a road between the cities of Newcastle and Maitland, NSW, Australia. Its all about the timing, and getting there at a time that the light from those cities is not also in the general direction of what you want to be shooting.

That said... really... its my second time out. I'll be looking for better sites soon, but the further I get from civilisation the more anxious I become. I really need to notify someone where I am going, and for how long. You think about stuff like that when you get to be old like me ~@|@~

Thanks sjtryon... here comes the second :0

OK, took the 43 out last night and tried it with the SR off/timer on thing. Longer focal length I'm not sure about but I generally like the results :)

Does that mean that it turns off automatically when you set the delay?

Decided to try some night photography... I know these arent as well focussed as they could be, but this is my first ever attempt at anything resembling astro. I plan to try more.

All suggestions regarding exposure etc very welcome. At the moment I am restricted to 30 secs because I don't have a remote. Also, should I be turning SR off? I didn't for these.

General info: DA15mm, 30 secs, ISO1600, f/4

Also, apologies if this ought to be in a different section... there are so many options. Just want to learn to drive this thing (K-5). And, please add your own, with exposure and lens info. I'm really keen to learn more.
