Norm, I'm quite impressed with the A400 & DA 1.4 TC results that you are getting, I have often wondered just how well these two would work together and you've certainly gotten my gears turning.

Thanks Norm, F16 as usable is good to know, and I will keep 400 and 800 in mind to get me there.

Norm can you provide your camera settings for the Vulture photos? I am always impressed with your A400 photos and want to understand my options better. You appear to be at a smallish aperture for a decent depth of field, so was it sunny enough or are you upping iso, tripod?

Very nice, what lens did you use for this photo, and was he pretty close when you took it?

Thanks for the kind comments guys. I also have some nice ones with him eating, but my wife said "UGH", so it makes me suspect that ones with bird guts aren't as popular.

In the three lens graph are they all set at 500MM in the comparison? Not sure what you are testing for here based on you conclusion comments. Larger apertures give higher shutter speeds? The more consistent pentax curves are the only thing I can deduct on my own from the data.

All good stuff.
I have not shot near enough with the 400 to be very far along that curve.
One other factor I hadn't thought of until now is I was set up on a deck, which would transmit vibration quite a lot. baro-nite how does your 1.4xL perform with the A400? I almost had one on Fleabay as a buy it now, until it was withdrawn. I have my suspicions that someone on here just may have been who got it. I got the A400 on Craigslist for a steal, mostly because it came with several other good lenses all for a price that would be cheap just for it. Due to the fact I don't shoot a lot "yet" with long lenses I don't want to break the bank on a teleconverter until I am acomplished with what I have now.

Thanks for the input everybody. I was actually using a K200D for those shots and I probably wouldn't go higher than 400 ISO with it, with the K5 I have more ISO headroom. Next time I will start out at f8 and move to f11 if conditions allow. I tend to keep camera in P mode and use the thumbwheels in hyper mode most of the time, unless I am using a M or Tak. Normally I keep auto ISO to max out at 3200, but for this application I could up the max to 6400 to gain some speed. My tripod setup is a Manfrotto 190XPROB aluminum with a 488RC2 ball head which I feel are up to the K5 and A400 for this application. I suspect that shallow depth of field and potentially to a low shutter speed for birds are the most likely culprits. As I said my Hat is off to you guys for the fine stuff you are getting.

I imagine a high shutter speed would be desirable to stop the fidgety little buggers.

Typically I will shoot the A400 from tripod, with mirror up remote, I use live view x10 feature for focus. Here are two I don't feel are correct and one maybe. |

I just wanted to jump in here and tell all you veterans of this 300+ club, my hat is off to all of you. It sure isn't an easy task to get these sharp tele shots, especially of critters. I have both a DA55-300 and an A400/5.6 and I just have not had that many successes with them. The best I have done was some elk off tripod. My birds usually just do not seem sharp, even if I pre focus at the bird feeder. The bird feeder looks great, the birds not as much.

It's a groundhog, not a muskrat. Muskrats are easier to focus than groundhogs, so we may have found the problem.

jurysi, any shots of the bird swallowing that big fish? The bird must think it's a snake or a pelican.
