Lens buying is easier for the long side too. Would this photo at 135mm look better cropped by 50%? Maybe buy a 200mm lens. Prices eventually rise to infinity but you don't have to go that far.
A sign that wider is better for you: all your kit lens shots are at 18mm and you can't fit everything in. I suppose it's possible to stitch some shots and calculate a satisfying field of view. Look at sample shots to see which wide compositions work. You may see a point where the photos don't look right, which is exactly 12mm for me. A secondary wide-angle issue is the choices are limited compared to the long end, especially for prime lenses.
My travel-vacation-wide-long lenses are the DA 16-45/4 and the DA 50-200 WR, with some primes added it for flavor. The 16-45 is wide enough for me, a step up in quality over the 18-55, a bit chunky but OK. If I want lighter or WR, I bring the 18-55 WR instead. The DA 50-200 is not as popular as the 55-300 and now the 55-300 has a WR version. Maybe the only reason left to carry the 50-200 is size and weight.
I have a truckload of lenses and carefully select about 8 (bare minimum) for most trips. Then not really use them.
