My yard man came Tuesday and after finishing my yard, his helper asked if I had a box? Sure, what do you need it for? Seemed he had found a rare creature lurking in the Woods of Otis....an elusive Horny Toad.
When I was a kid they we everywhere, most kids had a little matchbox with one in it, usually a young one no larger than a quarter. They were fairly common....until Fire Ants invaded the South and wiped out their main diet of large Red Ants.....and insecticides used to kill Fire Ants have also decimated Horny Toads. This is the first one I have seen in years, when I used to see them almost daily.
Yes, they are horny:D......they really do spit blood, and as every kid knew back then...if you turn them upside down and rub their little belly, they will go fast asleep! :)
