There is very little power anywhere in the camera's hotshoe and none at all on the center pin that fires the flash. All it does when the shutter fires is pull the center pin to ground, whether it sees a flash there or not. The rest of the pins are for communicating with a P-TTL/TTL flash, just 0-5V signals.

If you happen to have an old flash with a high trigger voltage, not only can you get a shock from the foot, it can damage the camera. Always test old flashes with a multimeter (center pin to ground on the side of the foot) before putting them on the camera, most made with in the last 20 years are fine though.

It can't recognize manual flashes, it should show up for P-TTL hotshoe flashes.
