It can be repaired but you need to find someone who still works on manual focus lenses. There used to be a lot of the technicians out there in any metro area but now here in the Twin Cities in MN there are just 3 shops. They generally don't work on AF lenses that have eletronics and motors in them. However they like Nikon and Pentax screw drive AF lenses. But even then these more electrically complex lenses can become unrepairable. I think it is kind of like back when the auto manufacturers planned on your car becoming unrepairable. Take a shop a Sigma manual focus lens and they can fix the front elements. The other positive part is would be that it's just the front elements rather than deeper into the lens since they are easy to get at.
