OK,
so you have the answer for my situation :)
I think it's AFc in combination with something; longer focal length might be a candidate for 'something'; I haven't heard about it when using shorter lenses (like kit lens) unless I missed it somewhere.

And how will it help if one is only following a subject in AFc? Last shot before it was at least a minute or so before the lock-up and not in continuous shooting mode.
No longer use of AFc and no longer lock-ups :)

Doubt it; mine locked up (as described earlier in this thread) in AFc and 'single shot mode'; (original) battery plenty full (50 shots or so after charge). Just can't remember if I was using TAv at that moment.

It happened to me as well. It was the first time that I used AF.c and the first time that I used the DA55-300.
Difference with you is that I was in single shot mode and buffer was empty. It locked up during the focusing; so I think it's safe to assume that the issue ain't buffer related. Red focus indicator stayed lit which was the first indication that something was wrong.
I was however on v1.12, not 1.13; shooting a basketball game.
