Hi Margriet,
That comment you posted is Mr. National Geographic saying the same thing in different words. "It doesn't meet the criteria" ... "Please study the art of photography."
The reason most people don't like shallow DOF with macros is the perspective. A shallow DOF imparts a sense of enormity. Small objects should fall completely within the DOF because they're small enough. Large objects just shouldn't fit into the DOF so that's why some of it is OOF. It's subliminal. What would have helped is not the whole subject necessarily being in focus, but a bit more of the background being distinguishable. It's too drastic of a transition between sharp focus and indistinguishable OOF blur.
It's still an extremely good image. Well done.

I'll also add that my photographic forté lies in aviation photography, and I've taken some photos that are better than some of the aviation photos printed in National Geographic. I would be hesitant to proclaim National Geographic as the standard against which any and all photos are to be measured.

A thoughtless comment like this can be let to slide once, but if it's a repeated insult then this so-called "judge" responsible needs to be sorted out.
We are here to JUDGE; we are not here to DISCIPLINE or to PARENT. |

When judging I use the third category with an added element of my own: Creativity/Originality/Impression. Impression in this instance is kind of like "wow" factor. It can be unoriginal and uncreative but still leave a major impression on me.

It's a really good shot. The one and only issue I have with it is that the focus seems to be just in front of the bird's head. The body is therefore sharper than the face. Otherwise great shot. Good colours and composition. The rain streaks add to the authenticity of the image.
