Mel,

You and the family should go down one evening. I'd suggest going earlier than we did (we got there about 5:30), so you still have some daylight left. Just take the Blue or Orange Lines on the Metro in and get off at Federal Triangle. It's an easy 3-4 block walk east. I would NOT drive since there is little if any parking.

(Click map for slightly larger image)

When you get off of the train take the exit and walk north to PA Ave. Turn left to walk west and it will take you straight to the Ellipse.

You have until January 1st to go...

Mike

Thanks Susan.... hard to do it handheld (to crowded for tripods) but I think my unsteady hands added some neat squigles. :)

Thanks guys! :)

I had my compact tripod with me but after fighting thru the crowds I decided it was easier to just see what I could wring out of the K110D at the high ISO's. Not too bad in these resized copies but it's clear that a lower ISO and using the tripod would have helped a great deal. There were far less people around on the Penn Ave side of the White House so I could have used it for the BOA shot but by that time my wife and her mother (visiting from TN) were ready to leave.
