Are we really THAT rare?

I've made a couple comments on this thread before, but we went over to Vancouver to see family, and between the Ferry, and downtown, I can honestly say there were more Pentax cameras than Canon and Nikon. While obviously there are more Nikon and Canon's around, it's nice to see. My 3 year old almost walked off with a K-r left on a playground. I ran up to a family walking away and sure enough it was theirs...:)

I've made a few comments on this thread that here on the island, Pentax is doing OK. I do worry that most of what I see are a bit older, which I contribute to the usual short term squeeze one sees when a company is prepping for it's sale. All the Pentax billboards are down, the ads in the shops etc. So too are the prominent Pentax camera displays.

Hoya brought out a great couple of cameras, but in just a few years they did long term damage, which was more publicly visible to the Hoya brand than I think they realize. I just hope the new owner can hit the ground running as the missteps can't continue.

Let me know if you ever get over to the island.

Pentax is still common here in Victoria, but it seems to be less common in the stores than back in the K10 K200 days. L&S built their new store and the display shows a large Pentax in the centre, but I notice the stock is much smaller.

Does Hoya know that Pentax used to walk all over Canon and Nikon here? I realize they are trying to target their advertising resources, but surely Vancouver/Victoria would be high on the list. All of the billboards and other ads have come down the past 2 years :(

This thread has me keeping an eye out for what brand camera someone is using. I don't know what it is here in BC but Pentax is common....not common like Canikon but it is very common.

What I worry about is the drop in sales and promotion the past 2 years. Most of the cameras I see are K10d and K200d etc. When Hoya took over, I think they ignored market data and sabotaged Pentax's future in this area. There used to be billboards and advertising all over the place. Hoya's market strategy seems to be to make Pentax a secret and unobtainable.

Where about's in Canada are you? In BC it's fairly common. In Victoria, Octoberfest last weekend, Pentax was equal with Nikon and Canon from what I could see. It's not unusual to see at all.

I took my son down to the lagoon this morning and there was a group taking shots with telephotos. I walked down and asked if they were a part of a club (hoping I could find some group in this small town that I could learn from.) They were very friendly and were more than welcoming. They asked what I shoot and I said Pentax. They awkwardly said they shoot 600 plus. I asked if I could bring my 1200. Apparently they thought it was a joke.....

There have been many time here on the west coast that Pentax has had a large presence. just not this time.

I was at the Saanich fair yesterday and about 25% of the cameras I saw were Pentax. I can't say there are always that many per capita, but they aren't that uncommon here.

While most cameras you see here are Nikon or Canon, Pentax has a fairly good following, especially from people that gre up in the 60s/70s/80s. While unusual, I was at a weekend event last spring and there was only Pentax....no Canon or Nikon.
