Good point,
The K3 has amazing reach under the right conditions, but I do struggle with noise. I am looking forward to using both....

As you know..the lens doesn't make the shot. Nice job. The reverse is getting an expensive telephoto....expectations...

Great colour and sharpness Ken!
I rarely have a chance to get out with the 1200 anymore, but did this morning. Probably due to the time of year, but there was very little wildlife around and the lighting was horrible, but it was nice to get out.
I noticed a band of light with a two freighters on the horizon. The atmospheric conditions made them move around and seem to float on the water which was very cool to watch. While it doesn't capture the effect of what I was seeing, here is a shot....
The only other lens I had with me was 28mm.....so here is the same shot with it to show how distant the freighter actually was. The freighter in the pic above is the smaller one shown here on the left..... |

Nice shot.....I've often wondered why there is a "Blue Jay" which is less blue than the Stellar Jay....?

I haven't had time to do much photography lately, but managed to get out for a couple of hours this morning. Both shots are with the A*1200..... |

Thanks for the feedback Larry. I could always sell the 55-300 if she outgrows it.
Stan....replacing the 50-135 with a 60-250 is an interesting idea.....although it might be a little heavy for her.......That is terrific shot from your wife BTW.
Thanks everyone.....I'll chew on it for a few days.

Thanks......sounds like I might need to lean towards a DA* 60-250 or 300......this might be a joint BD present.....for both of us.....

Thanks for the responses Stan and Sandy.
I sold my DA*300 because I couldn't justify having it and my other 300.....and I always turn AF off as it;s too slow, but looking back, there are times I miss the DA* as it's a lot easier to use hand held, was weather sealed and I was quite happy with the IQ.
Stan...the 60-250....I hadn't really thought about that one.....I could sell my 50-135 but I would hate to see it go......
Hmmm....the q with an adapter.....I could ask her about that. She's quite good, but will want something to grab and shoot quickly, and nail the shot when something rare stops in. I have no idea how difficult it would be to pick up a Q, AF and shoot?

Hope everyone doesn't mind yet another which lens to buy question.....
We started feeding the local birds 3 years ago, and since that time, we've become a regular stop for some of the more exotic (for these parts) migrating birds. I bought my wife a K-r and she has been using my DA*50-135 to take shots of some of the more interesting varieties, but the reach isn't enough for her and she has asked for a 300mm for her birthday.
I have an A*300 2.8 but it's too heavy for her and she needs auto focus. She was using my DA*300 before I sold it, but I'm not sure she is expecting such an expensive gift. My first thought is a DA 55-300 as it's light, cheap, and I've seen some very good photos here on the forum. I have not shot one myself however, so I don't know how it will fair with her expectations after using the DA*300.
Has anyone shot both the DA*300 and DA 55-300 and of so, what are your thoughts on the 55-300??

Nice shot of the Rufous Greyser....it really shows off the colour. We have about 6 Anna hummingbirds that stay with us here all year round, but the Rufous should be showing up in a month or two....which for us means that it is finally going to stop raining and warm up! I have mixed feelings....I love seeing them but they are much more aggressive than the Annas and tend to chase them away from our feeder. The Annas have become somewhat used to us and visit......peeping at us from a couple of feet when we are in the back yard.......
Making that A 400 shine!
