I can remember listening to a documentary type news special on the radio about a year or two after the US invaded Afghanistan. Locals were reportedly going from being happy with the invasion (to have the Taliban gone) to now looking longfully at the Taliban "good old days". The west broke promises of stability, law and order, clean water etc. The Taliban could apparently provide things that we were incapable of. I don't see why we are so surprised to see the locals turn against us.
Sounds like the past couple of years, we have been trying hard to reverse that...but now it's going to be long and painful. It should have been done right in the first place...
