Using the kit lens on your K20D won't really reap any benefits though. The kit, to be honest, isn't that great of a lens resolution wise, contrast wise, distortion wise, in fact, it is the WORST lens in Pentax's current line up (also the cheapest). I really hate mine and I will try to get rid of it as soon as I get my 35mm f/2 and when I can afford a 12-24mm f/4.
But I digress. You should really save up a bit more and then buy a better lens to get the best out of your K20D. The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 is a full frame lens, but you don't see anyone using it on their 10MP 1D mark III.

I don't see why you should get another kit. not really an upgrade if you juts give the old one to your mom and the new one to yourself. I think you should seriously consider investing in a better lens, such the Pentax 16-45mm f/4 or Sigma/Tamron 17/18-50mm f/2.8 OR better yet, get a normal prime like the Sigma f/1.4 or old FA-35mm f/2 OR 35mm f/2.8 LTD macro (although the latter is expensive).
