To show it off I did this test:
3 images stacked. I used F/5.6 to get the maximum sharpness I could... great test for stacking considering the microscopic DOF.
Taken with the macro flash setup I posted earlier.

Well guys I just took 8 gigs worth of macro shots with the new setup and one key thing i've discovered that I thought I'd share.
With the flash set to 1/16 power and my new macro flash setup, I can set the camera to continues drive mode and the flash will keep up until the buffer fills (atleast with RAW+ which is what I shoot). Hopefully I was able to get some good stacks using this new method :) Pictures will follow in the post your pictures section of the forum later... that is if I got any good ones

Well for now this is the solution I have come up with: |

Yeah I was looking at ones from ebay sellers I've purchased from before...... I couldn't believe the price these were going for from 1st party manufacturers! I can do $20 but not ~$80 for a simple cable

Im sorry, I do not know the correct term for the cable that connects the flash to the body using a wire. With my new DIY diffuser which has the 360 flash on camera, I can pop off 5 shots in rapid succession with the flash at around 1/8 or less power. I want to be able to do this but with the flash OFF camera. With these cables will I still get this performance? I've never understood PTTL and therefore have NEVER used it so thats not entirely relevant.
So yes, the whole goal is to get the flash off camera with on camera performance with the onboard out of the equation.

Well I solved my focus stacking issue...
5 images stacked using my M 50mm F/1.7 reversed taped on extension tubes. My flash was on camera with basically my take on Rense's flash diffuser... pictures tomorrow :)
I can take several images in a relatively quick manor now which is a HUGE help. There are some focus gaps, but hey its 4 AM in my area and im shooting handheld so needless to say im not at my prime ;)

a couple questions:
How much magnification is achieved with a 50mm reversed on a set ofextension tubes?
If I buy a PTTL cable for my flash will I not have to wait ~4 seconds between shots due to the onbaord charging up? Its making stacking shots incredibly difficult.

My M 28mm F/3.5 arrived so I decided to do some quick magnification tests....
As my sigma 105mms filter ring is dented and scraped I currently cannot use my reversing adapter (hopefully I can figure out a solution) so i used my DA 55-300mm. The subject is the infinity sign on my M 50mm.... if you have one check it out to see its actual size.
Sigma 105mm at 1:1 -
My regular setup (Sigma 105mm @ 1:1 + Pentax M 50mm F/1.7 reversed) -
Pentax DA 55-300mm @ 55mm + 28mm reversed -
Pentax DA 55-300mm @ 100mm + 28mm reversed -
Pentax DA 55-300mm @ 200mm + 28mm reversed -
Pentax DA 55-300mm @ 300mm + 28mm reversed -
note: These were taking super quick before I had to leave my house. I just held the AF 360 flash off camera with my left hand and didn't really adjust the exposure at all. Just a quick simple test...

Thanks for the info, but vignetting has yet to be a problem for me using a reversed 50mm. The cheap albinar 28mm however vignettes a heck of a lot unless I get the alignment perfect (reverse adapter has arrived yet so i've been taping them together.) where it has except able levels of it ;) Its funny I've asked this question on several forums and have gotten a plethora of different answers....
Guess I shouldn't have sold my M 200mm after all :ugh:

Thanks for the bump! 90% of my macro's in the last 4 months have been with reversed lenses...
Care to share your setup?

Ok, question. Do I gain anything by using my macro lens as the primary lens with the 50mm stacked?
How much magnification do i have when my 105mm lens is set to 1:1, with the reversed M 50mm focused at infinity?
Does the primary lens's minimum focusing distance greatly affect mag. when using the stacked lens method?

Alright, ha man this is getting complicated.
Ok so a question, how much working distance do cannonites have with the MPE-65 @ 2:1?

Right , so im asking what would be the best setup w/ bellows to achieve the most working distance while reaching 2:1....

My main thing is working distance.... so whats the max. working distance with bellows @ 2:1

Oh, ok Blue I understand!
I'd say this is relevant
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I took a quick video because I got a lot of questions about my setup on other forums. YES I KNOW I NEED A HAIR CUT! YES I KNOW ITS REAR ELEMENT NOT FRONT! YES I KNOW IM WEARING A LAME FENDER SHIRT DESPITE THE FACT THAT I LIKE GIBSON MUCH MORE....
(it was shot indoors so I wouldn't loose the little guy attempting focus stacking for the very first time.) You Tube |

Oh and I forgot to mention why I love reversing my M 50mm on the sigma so much. I lose very little light unlike with my extension tubes AND I can use my flash wirelessly which is the only way to get decent shots at >1:1.
So yes I would much rather be able to do the same for a new setup i.e. reverse a lens on an A lens but I only have one prime A lens so I doubt that will work. A reversed 28mm on tubes seems very interesting as a third setup, and I am willing to buy a cheap ebay off brand PTTL cable to use the flash off hotshoe (though Im sure it will be annoying). As a fourth setup, if someone reassures me that TC's will be great for macro with very little IQ drop that that would be a sensible fourth setup.... right?

Not quite sure what you mean, so what about for the K 28mm F/3.5? M 28mm F/2.8?
Thanks! I guess my dilemma with this idea which seems to be the best, is IQ drop. I here all over the forum about how cropping is generally better than sticking on a TC for tele's and I figure with macro I need max. IQ so.....?
Thanks audio!
Yes I remember that also. Now that I have two more days of school left this year, I'll finally be able to wake up early enough to get the bugs nice and still w/out using a spray. We'll see how that goes

I know that, I meant that setup as is without any switching or removing of parts :)
I am VERY intrigued by the prospect of a reversed 28mm however because of him though....
