WOW, now that is an interesting insect! A bee/wasp mimic hoverfly that also looks like a species of robber fly? Any head on pics :)

Its a wheel bug :)
I used to have two giant millipedes as pets when i was a little kid  I'll have to try and source one of the pictures of me holding it when I was like 10 :)
Thanks! Beautiful fly for sure, up there with horse flies IMO
Thanks :)

yup, I've seen a couple pictures of the exact same bug, all classified (roughly) as an ant mimicking assassin bug :)

The cutting off of the body parts was more or less intentional. I could have done a pano to include the wings, but that would have been WAY to much work for such little gain. Its not really the technical aspects I dislike of the photo

Wish I could give you the specific ID though :)
I just found a dying, but absolutely beautiful hover fly which also mimics bee's. Its eyes are truly awesome with yellow and black stripes though.... really like nothing I've seen before in person! It has some issue's with its legs or something and refuses to fly so expect a stack soon :)

Thats only because of the lights I used to illuminate the subject for the video :) It would have been very noisy without them.... they are "warm" hence the color shift

Your got one?!?!? Very cool..... which one did you get and for how much? What aperture was used? It might be worth testing for optimum aperture since I've heard a lot of sample variation exists. F/5.6 is best for some, ~F/6.3 for others, etc.

yea I've always known them as garden spiders. I have one living maybe 6 inches outside my kitchen window with about a 3 foot web spanning across the entire window. She's our family pet, only we dont need to feed her

its a crane fly
Its not to bad, but it is very specialized. Only works for early morning stacks of living subjects or pictures of dead ones :) Remember, I used to exclusively shoot field macro's ;) Extension tubes and a flash is my bread and butter :)
