If it used to show the shadow caused by the flash. This is useful with film camera when the result photo is not instantaneous. You activate the modeling light and observe the shadow of the model.

Are you sure the flash is not in "modeling" mode?

Make sure the setting switch is up (white dot).

The "setting switch" is the one on the right of the "test" button (looking at the back of the flash).
