The K10D works with firmware 1.00-1.30, not with 1.31 (the latest one).

It works with K10D with firmware 1.30 or earlier.

Actually, phase-detection autofocus using the dedicated AF module (when using the optical viewfinder and with the mirror down) is quicker than contrast-detection autofocus using the image sensor (in live view mode with the mirror up).

Had they done so when they launched SDM lenses, the bulk of Pentax users would have been pretty mad at Pentax, not being able to use the new lenses with the gear they then had... (*ist cameras, K100D, K110D and so on)

You need a body that "knows" about SDM, i.e. K10D or newer.

Yes, there is: it's'by fooling the camera on the lens's identity that the tweaked firmware makes the camera use screwdriven autofocus.

As a "collateral damage" RAW converters do not recognise the lens anymore either.
