The answer is yes for some categories, superzooms for instance, less so for UWA zooms.
One could argue that a DA★ zoom is a high-end lens, not a consumer zoom.
Time will tell.

DC is not a ring motor, it's a micromotor, and so are the non-Tamron SDMs -until now, that is :)

There was a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and there is a Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8.

Indeed, the smc Pentax-DA 12-24mm f/4's optical design was licensed from Tokina (and it was the only one; all other shared designs were Pentax designs licensed to Tokina).
