The Ricoh GR III is obviously not a Pentax camera. However, it didn't design itself, it draw development resources from the Ricoh Imaging camera development team (from the lens development team too but it doesn't matter here), which is also in charge of designing Pentax cameras.

There has been one camera launch per year for a few years: - 2016: K-1
- 2017: KP
- 2018: K-1 Mark II
- 2019: GR III

Does the NZ distributor belong to a family, to the same family since ages? If so, (b) is likely.

Indeed but, if you capitalise some marketing expenditures, you must then depreciate them over a certain period of time (a few years), therefore it's reculer pour mieux sauter as we say in French (take a step back in order to take a bigger jump forward, put off the inevitable).

But that's precisely the point: when a few people, part of a small customer base, promote a brand by making good images whereas websites with a huge reach disparage said brand, the future of the brand is at stake.

Their sole use of the Pentax brand is for making DSLRs, interchangeable lenses and the corresponding accessories. On other markets (high-end compact cameras, rugged compact cameras, 360° cameras) they prefer to use their own brand.
Remember that @Class A, you and I are talking about brand, not manufacturer.

The customer base of the Pentax brand in Japan is not that big: 3.1% of the DSLR market in 2018, which amounted to 468,952 units shipped. That makes roughly 14,500 cameras, i.e. 40 cameras per day. In addition, the Japanese DSLR market is rapidly declining: -36% during the first eight months of 2019 in comparison to the same period in 2018.
Extrapolating these share and trend would lead to Ricoh shipping 30 Pentax cameras per day in Japan in 2019. You can't fund much R&D from that.
I therefore agree with @Class A: a small, ageing and declining customer base is problematic and

Exactly. The Carl Zeiss Planar HFT 85mm f/1.4 has a smooth and pleasant bokeh, with gradual transitions between in-focus and out-of-focus areas (I did post some examples on Pentax Forums), yet its iris has a triangular shape.

The detailed comment (page 4) is the following:
Translation: 'Chromatic aberration is a bit too high at f/1.4 with a fringe of 2.1 pixels but it drops noticeably to become very good (0.8 pixel) at medium apertures.'

If the HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW is too expensive for your budget, just buy a half one. Picture taken by somebody from the Fujiya Camera shop and posted on Twitter フジヤカメラ店 (@fujiyacamera) | Twitter |

No surprise may be but I like to read such sentences as: - The centre is excellent from f/1.4 to f/5.6.
- The edges are excellent from f/1.4 to f/4
- The evenness from edge to edge is commendable, at levels of sharpness very close to those of the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4.
- CA (Chromatic Aberration) is very well controlled, the centre especially so.
- Distortion is virtually zero. For the pedantic in us, it can be measured at +0.01% pincushion.
- Bokeh is nice, very nice. The out of focus areas are smooth as silk and add to an overall “look” that characterises the best lenses – that is, giving the lenses a character, a visual feel to them that can't be measured but gives that extra something that lifts the images.
- Flare resistance is also very impressive and in fact no evidence of flare could be found.

As a Ricoh Imaging designed lens, yes but the Tamron designed 15-30mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 also use ring-type motors.

As indicated by its name the HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW will be using a DC motor, not a ring ultrasonic motor like the HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW.

20,000 units per year is approx. three times the size of the global medium format market before the introduction of mirrorless medium format cameras by Fujifilm and Hasselblad, which is said to have substantially increased the market size.
