This is possibly the sharpest action shot I've ever gotten with the K3 and 55-300PLM. These guys were pretty close to the pontoon boat I was on, so 190mm (285 FFE) was about right.

Finally taking the 55-300 PLM out in the field. The cormorants don't mind the surf; they dive in it.
K3; DA 55-300 PLM at 230mm. Majorly cropped.

Right, there was motion blur; I had set up for the perch on the right, did not refocus, and swiveled a bit to catch the bird on the left. Actually, I'm surprised I got this shot at all.
p.s. The two birds were not in the same focal plane; the one on the left was closer.

Here's another one at 630mm (DFA 150-450 + 1.4TC). A bit soft, yes, in morning light at ~180ft from my front porch.

The prone Skimmer looked distressed to me too, but it flew off a few minutes later. I found out that Skimmers make shallow depressions for resting and nesting--first they scrape with their feet, and then they lie down and rotate. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black_Skimmer/lifehistory

So I bit the bullet and bought not only the D-FA 150-450 (to replace my Sigma 120-400) but also the DA 1.4x TC. First decent opportunity to shoot birds with the combo at full reach (630mm) was yesterday. Both lightly cropped, f8 1/800 on K3.

I lucked into a feeding frenzy in Half Moon Bay, CA. I'm starting to get the hang of shooting BIF; this was on a monopod with AF-S, burst mode, no stabilization.

Thanks, Steve. I like the landscape shots in your gallery as well as the teles.

Thanks.
Yes, sometimes it's better to be lucky...
Nice detail on the second one.

I've been admiring the images here and appreciating the commentary about learning to use a body/lens combo. I still need a lot more practice with my K3/Sigma120-400, but this shot seems OK to me.
