I can answer that first one... Didn't organise to meetup with zkarj, although I probably should have sent you a PM sorry.

I planned to strike up a convo with any bloke I saw wielding a K-5. But didn't see another K-5 until 5pm Sunday by which time I was exhausted and leaving the show.
Did speak to some other Pentax users, one being a K20D guy who happened to be another Aussie. And much to my surprise, found a guy shooting with a Pentax 67II medium format film camera. I lugged mine there too but didn't expect to see another.

cheers

Interesting to hear your thoughts on the airshow, zkarj.
As you might have seen on here, I was there too, all 3 days. The fact that the FW190 didn't fly on Saturday or Sunday was pretty disappointing. I know I have heaps of pics that are blurred due to me not being steady enough in panning, oh well.
I also was there with the K-5 and it performed excellently.

...It's a pity you didn't get to see the Strikemaster, it does sound weird about not wanting to fly it off the wet runway. It was certainly raining a lot in the morning here today before the show.

What did you think about the "new" early model P40?

Maybe come to Aus next time for an airshow? :) I'm curious to see how the Aussie stuff would stack up, I've hardly been to anything at home myself. Main reason being that nothing much happens over in the west. Not that much longer on a plane to go to NZ really.

cheers

Arpe, thanks so much for your suggestions, really appreciate it. Sounds like some really good ones in there too. About the DOC offices, I don't know where they are either (of course :p). But I remember last time we found the one in Wanaka easily, probably from the generic tourist information or the people at the accomodation. I remember the DOC office had a huge amount of information and brochures on all the walks and natural parks, things like that. Information about your wildlife too - from memory they had some preserved birds in display cases in the office!

I will be going through Kaikoura, so I'll try to check out that seal colony, thanks.
Picton to Nelson drive - cool sounds good.
Macs brewery - that's my sort of tour so I'll have to look into that!
Lake Rotoiti - will try and check it out. A lake that doesn't dry up over summer is pretty foreign to me so I want to check out as many as possible :p For photo ops too of course
Punakaiki - thanks for the recommendation!
Hmm, you're not the first who has mentioned the rocks!! I'll try and be as careful as possible.
The mining history sounds interesting, thanks for the links.
If you ever find yourself in Western Aus I will try and return the favour...

cheers

G'day Kiwis.

As I mentioned a while ago in this thread, I'll be over in NZ soon. Will be in Christchurch this Sunday afternoon actually.
Zk-ARJ - I see you will be heading to Omaka for the airshow. I will be there too for the whole weekend, really looking forward to it! I'll make a note to try and chat to anyone else I see with a K-5...

Also replying to Class A's comment from another thread...
Thanks for the recommendation to check out the Queen Charlotte track/area. It's definately on my list for when I am in the area. Don't think I will be able to walk the entire track (not sure how long it is??) but I'll check out what I can do in a day when I'm there. From memory your DoC offices have quite a bit of info on this sort of thing?

Also regarding Milford and Doubtful sounds, might be out of scope for this NZ trip. However I visited Milford last year and loved it! Awesome place!

This time I will be travelling up the east coast from ChCh, through Blenheim and Picton, then over to Nelson and down the West Coast.
Any general suggestions of things to see are welcomed!

cheers

"Pentax Australia" is actually just CR Kennedy aswell, I'm pretty sure. But in reality they are just the wholesaler/distributor/servicing agent etc. They also do Hasselblad and Sigma I think?? (in Oz).

Wow - I can really see where you're coming from now.
I can feel your pain to a degree, lens prices in Aus are often ridiculous compared to the US and other places, for example DA15 limited for >$1300AUD... Saying that it looks like IRL charges double the price again! Who are they kidding?

On another note, slowly finishing off the planning for my NZ trip for next year (around Omaka airshow). Will be in and out of Christchurch from 18 April to early May.

cheers

Just curious, what does Littles do or not do? I did see some of the local NZ prices however, ouch.
You guys also mention coming over to Oz to buy stuff, do Aussie stores not want to send to NZ??

I might just say, good on you for pointing this out. Disappointing that B&H wont answer your question properly. Who wants to pay the expensive postage etc from USA to Oz or NZ if the item isn't new, hey :hmm:

Fair enough, if you do decide to go perhaps I will see you there somewhere.
I suppose if you see a lot of the NZ shows they may get repetitive... For me it's still a real novelty plus the WWII and WWI stuff is where my interest lies.
Have you considered Avalon 2011 over in Geelong?

Always thought you guys paid a bit too much attention to the sheep!?

Ok I better stop hijacking your thread before you kick me out... Thanks for the chat, Transit and others.

Pete - That Dragon Rapide (?) pilot sure is keen, looks way low.

Class A - yeah, although I will probably pop back in here close to when I go over (April 2011).

It is a nice lens, especially for the price. Did you want a second 55-300?
I'll need to think about whether I want to sell it, haven't really thought about it so far... I suppose it might help slightly with the 60-250 cost.
How much are they worth second hand?

Thanks for the notes about Omaka, that sounds awesome, appreciated!
I got pretty dusty at Wanaka at one stage, walked behind a Mustang that just started up...

cheers

Thanks, yeah I am looking forward to it.
I thought that most of you guys are up in the North Island, but figured it doesn't hurt to pop in here and say hello anyway :)

It's only a short ferry trip away right? ;)

Thanks, and yes the 55-300 is my default plane lens, as well as the M400 if they get too far away. The 55-300 is great, but I am considering getting the DA* 60-250 before CF 2011 - that is if I can afford to anyway. Actually making it to NZ is the first priority.

Seeing you have been to Omaka before I might ask a couple of questions if you don't mind...
- Do you know how close the planes get to the viewing area and stands? Wanaka was really quite close so I would assume Omaka to be about the same.
- Any idea which way the viewing area faces in regards to the sun? If the sun ends up being at your back most of the day then this would be perfect AFAIK...

I took this shot with the K200D and 55-300 at Warbirds over Wanaka this year:

Thanks Pete, I'm sure I will. Looking forward to it and counting down the weeks/months already.
Let me know if you decide to head to next years show, or just look out for someone else with Pentax gear, prob be pretty rare I guess. Although this year at Wanaka I did manage to spot an older fellow with a Spotmatic!

Hard for me to plan in advance too, only do it when I have no choice... Accomodation had been scarce for months now.

I'll also be stopping in ChCh for a few days too and driving around the south island a bit.

cheers

G'day Kiwis, is anyone heading to the Classic Fighters airshow in Blenheim next year? (April 22-24).
I will be coming over for it like I did for Wanaka this year... :)

Took this today near Aoraki Mt Cook and the Tasman Glacier
cheers

G'day Kiwis :)
In a few short days I'll be holidaying in your fine country for 2 weeks or so. The highlight for me will be going to the Warbirds over Wanaka show on April 3-4. Anyone else here going?
I'll also be going to ChristChurch, Akaroa, Lake Tekapo, Queenstown and Te Anau from 29 March to 10 April. If anyone is interested in meeting up for a bit of a shoot, let me know and I'll see what I have planned for that day.

cheers,
Jason

Thanks for your link zkarj.

I'm beginning to think you guys are spoilt over there, with all these events :)
However we actually had a small fly in over here last weekend, have a look at my thread here if you would like to have a look.

Thanks for the photos Transit!
I have read a little about Omaka, could be another excuse to visit your country at a later date...

I'm pretty sure a Corsair will be one of the main attractions at Wanaka this year, if it's a local NZ 'bird I'm guessing/assuming it would be the same one as in your photo.
I think I will need to get some practice on high speed panning!

cheers for the reply

Hello Kiwi Pentaxians,
Is a humble Aussie allowed in here? :)

I'm heading over to NZ for a holiday next year around Easter.
Will be in the South Island, heading to warbirds over wanaka.

Will any of you be attending and shooting the warbirds?

cheers,
