I mostly use the 90-180 for macro work because it has the right focal length, the right stops and the zoom gives me latitude when framing. Fixed focal length lenses can require a lot of tripod adjustments when doing macro work, but not the zoom. This zoom with tubes is a proven combination for macro work.

I have had the 90-180 for many years now and agree that f/45 can be a problem. But on the positive side, I have used it on some macro work at f/45 and the images were published. You just can't enlarge them like the f/11 work. I can't recommend landscape work at f/45 with this zoom.

Thnaks! Using this lens in general is difficult due to its weight. Then there is the challenge of CA and shutter vib to consider. But it can be used successfully.

Be aware that the chromatic in this lens will affect your shots, even in B&W, as it will make the edges of objects slightly soft. Of course, it is worse with color film. You are quite lucky to find the outer bay tubes, as they are probably the rarest accessory for the system. I am lucky to have a set of mint ones. The 600 can be very sharp once you get it figured out.

Thanks. The helicoid is the variable tube for macro work. The 600 is a strange lens. Massive chromatic at f/4 but it calms down a lot by f/13. Technically it is afflicted by spherochromatism. Beyond f/13 it is quite sharp and the chromatic is near zero by f/22. I use it for birds, lightning and sunsets. For birds it does OK once you realize that shutter vib can really affect this lens. Here's a bird shot with the 600 + 2x converter, cropped.

I don't use the leaf shutter on the 165 when shooting macro work with the helicoid or other tubes.

Thanks. I used the helicoid tube + the #2 tube. The 165 is my favorite lens for macro work but use the 90-180 zoom also. Both are proven.

Okay Tuco, here's the 165LS used in macro work because of its focal length and f/32 stop. Love the Ernostar design of this and the 200mm. I use it for landscapes as well but portraits rarely.

It's a 55-100 and yes, it does well at the long end. It's about as sharp as the primes in its focal range. A real landscape workhorse.

Nice detail and color in that fall color shot. The 300 EDIF is quite a lens. I use mine for landscapes as well.
